Snowshoeing in Sodankylä

The short answer

Book Arctic SISU Experience's day if you want snowshoeing, ice fishing and a salmon lunch in one outing and have most of a day to give it. If you want a shorter snowshoe walk, drive to Pyhä-Luosto, where shorter walks are sold.

The one guided snowshoe trip we found sold in Sodankylä is Arctic SISU Experience’s, and it makes a day of it.

What the day includes

Five hours, for up to eight people: a guided snowshoe walk, ice fishing, and a salmon barbecue lunch, with a certificate at the end. It costs 350 euros each. Thermal layers are not included, so come dressed for a day outdoors.1

When to drive to Luosto instead

If the snowshoeing is what you want, the walks in Pyhä-Luosto are shorter, start at under a third of the price, and include one from the top of Pyhä and three in the evening; snowshoeing in Pyhä-Luosto compares them.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Does the day include a pick-up?

The listing offers pick-up from any address within an area it shows on a map, not from a list of hotels. Check that your accommodation falls inside it before booking; if it does not, ask the company whether it can collect you for an extra charge or where to meet.

What if we cancel?

The listing, as we read it, allows free cancellation until 24 hours before the start. For a five-hour day outdoors, look at the forecast before that point rather than on the morning itself, since after it the booking is no longer free to cancel.

How hard is it?

The listing says the day involves physical exertion and that you drill through the ice on the lake yourself. It gives no distance for the snowshoe walk, so if you are unsure about a long outing in the cold, ask the company how far you will walk to the lake before booking.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
