If you are staying in the village and want an hour more with lunch by a fire, ask Kola Extreme Safaris what its 240 euros covers. Snowmobile safaris in Salla come from two companies. Most start at the Sallatunturi fell resort, about 10 km from the village centre, and one starts in the village itself.

Two hours to Ruuhitunturi

Sallatunturin Tuvat’s short safari runs from Sallatunturi through snowy forest to Ruuhitunturi fell and back, with a stop for coffee and a sweet bun. The company says you can arrive in everyday clothes: the gear, driving lessons, guide and fuel are all included.

Kola Extreme Safaris rides to the same fell from its base in the village centre, fits you with a suit, boots, gloves and helmet, and makes a fire at the fell hut for coffee and sausages. It takes an hour longer, and the listing does not say whether its price is per person.

A long day out

For a full day, Sallatunturin Tuvat offers about 60 km along Salla National Park towards the eastern border with a picnic lunch, or about 70 km to a reindeer farm in the wilderness, with soup in a Lapp hut and reindeer to feed.

Do I need my own winter clothing?

No. Sallatunturin Tuvat says you can start its safaris in everyday clothes, with all the snowmobiling gear provided. Kola Extreme Safaris fits a helmet, balaclava, boots, gloves and a driving suit at its base before setting off. Wear warm layers underneath all the same; you sit still for long stretches.

What do children pay?

Sallatunturin Tuvat prints a child's price for ages 3 to 11 on its shorter safaris: 57 euros to Ruuhitunturi. Neither the long safaris nor the Kola listing gives a child's price, so ask before booking a family day, and ask how a small child rides.

What does the damage excess mean?

It is the self-liability the listings print for an accident: 890 euros per machine at Sallatunturin Tuvat and 1,000 at Kola Extreme Safaris. Two people sharing a machine share that risk. Ask whether the excess can be reduced, and check your travel insurance before you ride.
