The short answer

Start from your youngest child's age, because it rules out more trips than the price does. With a toddler, the one snowmobile trip listed here that takes one seats the child in a sled behind the guide. From six or seven, the road trips with a heated shelter or a village setting open up, and they cost far less. Ask for a child fare before booking, since the listings show one price per person.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person and the lowest total for four. All four price per person, and the listings show one price, so the four-person total multiplies it by four; ask for a child fare. Only the prices are marked.

Where these figures come from
  • Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park: The one trip here that takes a toddler: children from one ride in a sled behind the guide, and overalls, boots and gloves are lent. Two adults share each snowmobile.
  • Easy Travel: A snowmobile trip from age four, with children in a sled towed by the guide and private transport. The dearest here, and its listing does not include winter clothing.
  • Keo Wilderness: From age six: a heated shelter, salmon soup and a fire to cook the catch, in two and a half hours. Thermal suits on request. It takes nobody over 65.
  • Polar Star Travel: From age seven: a drive north to a small village to fish, with a snack and a drink. The listing does not mention a shelter or clothing.

Most families choosing an ice fishing trip in Levi start with the price and the fish. The age of the youngest child decides more, because the trips turn children away at very different ages and print the rule far down the page.

With a toddler

Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park’s trip is the one in the table that takes children from one year old. They ride in a sled behind the guide’s snowmobile while two adults share each machine, and overalls, boots and gloves are lent. At the listed 189 euros a person, a family of four pays 756 euros. Ask whether a child in the sled pays the full fare.

From four

Easy Travel’s snowmobile trip takes children from four, also in a sled towed by the guide, with private transport. It is the dearest here at 245 euros a person, 980 for four, and winter clothing is not listed among what it includes, so budget for hiring it if you have none.

From six or seven

The road trips open up, and they cost a fraction of the snowmobile ones. Keo Wilderness takes children from six to a heated wooden shelter with salmon soup and a fire to cook the catch, for 89 euros a person, 356 for four. For a child who gets cold easily, the shelter is the reason to choose it. Polar Star Travel takes children from seven on a drive north to a village to fish, with a snack and a drink, for 113 euros a person, 452 for four.

Wonderlapland’s trip is the cheapest of all at 80 euros a person, 320 for four, but its listing sets no age and asks you to bring warm and thermal clothing, so ask before booking with a young child.

From twelve

Older children can ride on the snowmobile itself. Kinos lets a driving adult take a child of 12 or over, and over 120 cm tall, as a passenger on its fishing safari. Safartica’s five-hour fishing safari is one to check carefully: its listing seats children from four to 14 in a sledge but also lists it as unsuitable for children under 12, so ask which applies before you book.

How the trips compare on the fishing itself is set out in ice fishing in Levi, and the trips that go out by snowmobile in snowmobile and ice fishing in Levi. The rest of the resort is on the Levi destination page.

What the snowmobile ride adds to the price, and what each trip costs per hour, is worked out in ice fishing prices in Levi.

Questions people ask

Will the children actually catch something?

Nobody promises it. Wonderlapland's listing says outright that a catch is not guaranteed, and none of the other listings we read promises one. What differs is what fills the time if the fish do not bite: Keo Wilderness has a heated shelter, salmon soup and a fire to cook on, Polar Star Travel a snack in a village, the snowmobile trips the ride itself. For a child, that part matters as much as the fishing.

Can a teenager sit on the snowmobile rather than in the sled?

On Kinos' fishing safari, from 12: its listing lets a driving adult take a child of 12 or over as a passenger, if the child is over 120 cm tall. The other snowmobile listings put children in a sled behind the guide, up to 14 on Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park's and Safartica's. The listings that set a driving age put it at 18.

What if our youngest cannot sit still for three hours?

Choose the shortest trip with somewhere warm to go. Keo Wilderness' trip lasts two and a half hours and includes a heated wooden shelter, which gives a restless child somewhere to sit out of the wind. The others last three hours or more, and their listings as we recorded them mention no shelter, so ask what the plan is if a child gets cold before the end.
