Family northern lights in Muonio: which evening takes your children
Illustration photo: a campfire in the snow, not at the resort's evening walk.
The short answer
With children under seven, book the resort's family package, whose aurora evening is a two-hour walk to a campfire open from age four, or the December snowmobile evening where small children ride in a sleigh behind the guide. With children from seven, the three-hour evening by car is the easiest. Do not book the Christmas aurora package with anyone under twelve: the resort says it is for families with children aged twelve and over.
Every Muonio aurora evening has its own minimum age, and so does the package it comes in. Read both before booking.
The package line
The resort’s Christmas aurora package, with its evenings by snowmobile and by car, is sold for adults and families whose children are twelve or older.1 Its winter family package is the opposite: designed for families with smaller children, with a guided evening walk to a campfire as its aurora night.2
The evening line
The walk takes children from four. So does one snowmobile evening in December, where children sit in a sleigh towed behind the guide’s machine while the adults drive, for about two hours.3 The three-hour evening by car starts at seven,4 and the snowshoe night at twelve.
Without a package
The Muonio evenings are not sold on their own, so a family staying elsewhere drives to Ylläs, where the evening by a fire is sold for all ages. The age limits of every Muonio format are set side by side on northern lights in Muonio, and the family evenings in Levi on family northern lights in Levi.
Questions people ask
How late do the evenings finish?
The Muonio descriptions give lengths but not start times: two hours for the walk, the snowshoe night and the December snowmobile evening, three for the evening by car. The all-ages evening in Ylläs starts at eight on a Tuesday and lasts two and a half hours, so it ends around half past ten, plus the drive back to Muonio.
What will the children wear?
On a resort package, the resort lends every guest a winter overall, snow boots with a pair of woollen socks, a balaclava and warm gloves for the whole stay, and asks you to bring thermal underwear, a woollen or fleece middle layer, a hat and a scarf. Its packing list also suggests heat packs, which are worth having for small hands on a two-hour evening.
Do children pay less?
The resort's package pages print a starting price per person and no child price, so ask for one with your dates; the Muonio evenings themselves carry no price at all. In Levi, the snowshoe evening has a separate booking category for children of twelve to fourteen, and the all-ages evening in Ylläs prints a single from-price. Nothing read for this page promises a lower fare for a child.
