The short answer

If you are two and happy to take turns, share a machine: on every tour here it saves each of you a good deal. If each of you wants to drive the whole way, the short tours add the least for a solo seat. For the most riding per euro, the longer tours cost less per hour than the two-hour ride, and outside the holiday weeks one of them costs less again.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Two-hour rideNature tourEasy-going tourWilderness hut
Sharing a machine €109 – lowest shared price €129 €115 €180
Driving alone €155 – lowest solo price €180 €160 €255
What the solo seat adds €46 €51 €45 – smallest solo supplement €75
Per hour, sharing €54.50 €43 €46 €36 to €45
Holiday weeks, sharing No change printed No change printed €125 €210

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: lowest shared price, lowest solo price and smallest solo supplement. Holiday weeks are 13 December to 3 January and 31 January to 28 February. The wilderness hut's hour figure is a range because the tour lasts four to five hours, so the per-hour row carries no mark.

Where these figures come from
  • Two-hour ride: Two hours and 20 km from Äkäslompolo, with a hot drink and bun in a kota.
  • Nature tour: Three hours and 30 km with a stop for the Siberian jays, from Äkäslompolo.
  • Easy-going tour: About two and a half hours on an easy track, with a hot juice and a snack halfway.
  • Wilderness hut: Four to five hours and 35 km with lunch by the stove at the hut.

On a Ylläs snowmobile tour, the solo seat is the part of the price that varies most.

From Äkäslompolo

Snow Fun Safaris prints a shared and a solo price for each of its tours,1 and its terms put fuel, insurance and the thermal clothing in the price.2

From the hut operator

Ylläs Experiences prints the same two prices and raises them in the Christmas and February holiday weeks.3

What children pay on these rides is set out on the family snowmobile safari in Ylläs.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Is fuel included?

On the Äkäslompolo operator's tours, yes: its terms list fuel, insurance, thermal clothing, boots and helmets in the price. The other operator's snowmobile page does not list what the price includes beyond the tour and the lunch, so ask before you pay.

What about a snowmobile without a guide?

The Äkäslompolo operator also rents snowmobiles by the day from nine to five, with riding wear and a map included and fuel charged by consumption. The renter is liable for damage up to 1,200 or 1,500 euros depending on the engine. That is a different thing from a guided tour, and none of the tours here allows riding alone.

Are there cheaper dates?

One of the two operators charges more from 13 December to 3 January and from 31 January to 28 February, and less in the weeks either side. The other prints one price for the whole winter. If your dates can move, the quieter weeks save a little on the second operator's tours.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
