Snowmobile safari price in Muonio: what the figure covers

The short answer

Budget 159 euros a head for the two-hour ride at Nivunki Village if two of you share a machine, and 238.50 if you drive alone. The longer rides cost more but less per kilometre: the fifty-kilometre day works out cheapest by distance. Harriniva's rides have no price of their own, because they are sold only inside holidays. Check the cancellation rule before you pay, as the two sellers are far apart.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Frosty TrailsSärkitunturi eveningOld Mill Äkäsmylly
Two adults sharing one machine €318 €460 €640
Four adults on two machines €636 €920 €1,280
Per kilometre, sharing €7.95 €7.67 €6.40 – the lowest price per kilometre for a rider sharing a machine

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per kilometre for a rider sharing a machine. Totals are the village's per-person prices multiplied by the number of adults. The per-kilometre row divides the shared price by the distance the village prints; a longer ride is not a better ride for that reason alone.

Where these figures come from
  • Frosty Trails: The two-hour beginners' loop to Nivunkijärvi and a kota, the cheapest ride Nivunki Village prices.
  • Särkitunturi evening: Four hours in the dark up to a fell, the longer of the village's two aurora rides by snowmobile.
  • Old Mill Äkäsmylly: Five hours and fifty kilometres, the longest ride with a fixed timetable and a printed price.

Snowmobile prices in Muonio are only comparable once you know how each one is counted.

Per person, two to a machine

Nivunki Village prices every ride per person on the assumption that two people share a snowmobile, and prints a single-driver price beside it that is exactly half as much again.1 Nothing is published for a child.

What distance buys

The short loop is the cheapest ticket and the dearest by distance. The day to the old mill costs twice as much for two and a half times the kilometres, which is why it comes out lowest per kilometre in the table above.

What cancelling costs

The village refunds in full up to 24 hours before departure and charges the whole price inside that.2 Harriniva’s rides come only inside holidays, and its terms take the full amount at booking and keep it as the cancellation fee.3 That makes the resort price the least flexible figure in Muonio, however much it includes.

Levi’s prices, 46 minutes away, are set out on snowmobile safari price in Levi, and the rides themselves on snowmobile safari in Muonio.

Questions people ask

What happens if the snowmobile is damaged?

The resort packages state a self-liability of up to 1,200 euros per snowmobile, which is the most a driver pays towards damage to the machine. Nivunki Village's pages do not print a figure, so ask for it before you ride: it is the one cost on a snowmobile safari that can be larger than the ticket itself, and it applies to each machine rather than to each person.

Is there a trail fee on top of the price?

Not around Muonio. The area organisation says trail permits are not needed when exploring the municipality, that riding is allowed only on marked snowmobile routes and trails, and that you can make a voluntary donation towards keeping them in good condition. On a guided safari the route is the guide's, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

Do we pay extra for clothing?

Not at Nivunki Village, which lends thermal gear, boots, gloves and hats with its rides and asks you only to bring your own thermal underwear and a fleece. The resort packages include winter clothing for the whole stay. Neither seller lists an extra charge for a helmet or for the hot drink on the way.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
