Husky safari in Kemi: which ride to book

The short answer

Book the ride that fills the gap you have. With no winter clothing and no car, Sea Lapland Safaris' ride covers both and prints the trail length. With a car and warm clothes, or with a group that wants the dogs to itself, the private safari in Keminmaa costs less per person. Ask it how far you will run before you pay, because its listing does not say.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lower price per person. Both price per person. Only the price is marked: a private safari and a shared one with clothing included are different purchases.

Where these figures come from
  • Sea Lapland Safaris: Everything arranged from town: a full winter outfit at the safari house, a car to the kennel and a 5 km run you drive in pairs. Children sit in their parents' sled.
  • Old Pine Husky Lodge: A private safari for your own group at a lodge in Keminmaa, with coffee or tea and child discounts. Cheaper per person, but you get there yourself and the listing gives no trail length.

Kemi sits on the coast, and husky kennels are fewer here than in the fell resorts. Two rides are sold on the booking platforms for the area, and they solve different problems.

If you have nothing with you

Sea Lapland Safaris starts at its safari house on Lumilinnankatu in Kemi, where you change into a full winter outfit, down to wool socks and gloves. A car then takes you to the kennel for a 5 km run that two guests drive in turns, with a hot drink after. It costs 195 euros per person and states exactly what the price covers.

If you have a car and a group

Old Pine Husky Lodge in Keminmaa sells a private safari of about two hours for your group alone, at 116 euros per person with discounts for children, coffee or tea included and a start at ten in the morning. Its listing names neither the trail length nor clothing, so ask about both before booking, and plan to drive there yourself.

The trade-off

The gap of 79 euros per person pays, on the Kemi ride, for the transfer, the outfit and a published 5 km trail. On the Keminmaa ride it buys privacy and a lower price, with two things left unknown. Both can be cancelled free until a day before.

The Keminmaa lodge also sells shared rides of fifteen minutes to an hour on the sled on its own website, booked by message or e-mail. Which of those suits whom is on the best husky tour in Kemi.

What makes a husky safari worth its price anywhere is in the Rovaniemi husky safari guide, and the rest of the town is on the Kemi destination page.

Questions people ask

Who drives on the ride from Kemi?

Two guests share a sled and take turns, and the driver must be at least 18 and fit enough to handle it. Children ride in their parents' sled. The listing does not print a youngest age, so check with the operator before booking with a baby or toddler, and dress small children for sitting still.

Does the Keminmaa safari lend winter clothing?

Its platform listing does not say. The lodge's own website says boots and overalls can be rented on site for its shared rides, without printing a price, and its own private package leaves boots, socks and overalls out of the price. Ask what the rental costs when you book, and add it to the comparison with the Kemi ride, where the outfit is included.

What happens if we are late?

At the Keminmaa lodge the listing asks guests to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start, and says that if you are more than 15 minutes late the safari may not go ahead and the booking is charged anyway. Plan the drive with a margin, especially after snowfall.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
