Questions people ask

Does an evening walk cost more?

Not much. Ruka Adventures' evening walk in search of the northern lights costs €85, Ruka Safaris' €90 and MyTrail's night sky walk €90, close to the daytime walks. Adventure Apes' evening hike costs €99. The evening walks set higher ages, though: Ruka Adventures and Adventure Apes take no one under twelve and fifteen respectively.

Are longer walks better value?

Per hour, yes. Ruka Adventures' two-and-a-half-hour Pyhävaara walk costs about €33 an hour, while Ruka Safaris' Valtavaara walk costs about €21 an hour over four and a half hours and its Oulanka walk about €23 over five. The long days also include the drive out, so the walking itself costs less than the total suggests.

Is the gear included?

Ruka Safaris includes the gear, a winter outfit and hiking snacks on its daytime hike, and Ruka Adventures lends snowshoes and clothing on its Pyhävaara walk. MyTrail asks for your own winter clothing on the private walk, and Adventure Apes' listing names no gear, so ask both what they lend before you leave the warm layers at home.
