The short answer

For a first ride, book Wildmaker's private eight kilometres, collected from your lodging. For a longer run with your own group only, its thirteen. For a whole day at the runners alone, its full-day safari from age fifteen. For a half day behind your own team with lunch in a kota, Nivunki Village. For small children, a Harriniva family package, where a musher drives. For the dogs without a ride, the resort's kennel visit.

Muonio’s husky tours are few, and each one is built for a different kind of visitor.

A first ride

Wildmaker’s eight kilometres are private, collected from your lodging in Muonio, and shared between two of you who swap drivers halfway, with coffee by a fire.1 It is the gentlest way in, and nobody outside your group is on the tour.

A longer run, your group only

The same operator’s thirteen kilometres keep everything else the same and add distance. Its full day is the one for a confident adult or teenager who wants their own sled all day: single drivers only, lunch on the trail, from age fifteen.

A half day with lunch in a kota

Nivunki Village sells three hours and eighteen kilometres behind your own team, with salmon soup and hot drinks in a kota halfway.2 It is the only husky ride in Muonio with a published timetable.

Small children

Harriniva’s family packages include a ride of five or six kilometres on which a professional musher drives and one family has the team to itself.3 For the dogs without the sled, the resort’s kennel visit is covered on husky farm in Muonio.

For a wider choice of kennels, Levi is 46 minutes away and ranked on best husky tour in Levi.

Questions people ask

Do we need our own winter clothing?

For Wildmaker, plan on it: its husky page lists transport, a guide, coffee and time with the dogs, and says nothing about lending clothing. Nivunki Village lends thermal gear, boots, gloves and hats with its tours and asks you to bring thermal underwear and a fleece. Harriniva's packages include winter clothing for the whole stay.

Which days can we go?

Nivunki Village runs its half day on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, at half past nine and half past one. Wildmaker does not publish a timetable for its private rides, which are arranged for your group, and Harriniva's rides follow the weekly programme of the holiday you book. Check the Nivunki days first if a particular date matters.

What about a multi-day husky trip?

Harriniva sells one as a holiday: a six-night package with a five-day expedition in which each participant drives and cares for a team, covering about 25 kilometres a day and sleeping in wilderness cabins. It is for adults only and needs no previous husky experience. Its seven-night package includes a two-day overnight husky trip instead.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
