Private snowmobile tour in Enontekiö: what comes closest

An empty packed-snow track running straight between tall snow-laden spruces

The short answer

In Hetta, pay for a snowmobile to yourself on a scheduled ride, which both companies price, or ask Näkkälä Eräpalvelut for a quote on its long safari, which it prices only on request. A party that wants to ride without a guide can hire a machine in the village and keep to the tracks where no permit is needed. The nearest guided ride sold as private is in Kilpisjärvi, 132 minutes away.

Neither company guiding snowmobile rides from Hetta publishes a private day tour. What can be bought comes in pieces.

A machine to yourself

Both sell a solo seat on their scheduled rides, which keeps a passenger off your snowmobile but not other guests off the trail. Näkkälä Eräpalvelut’s long safari has no published price at all: it is sold from January on request,1 which is the closest thing in Hetta to arranging your own day.

Riding without a guide

A rental firm in the village hires snowmobiles, and on the tracks around Hetta and the Victoria route no permit is needed.2 Hiring puts your party alone on the machine and the trail, with nobody to show the way.

Groups

Näkkälä’s group programmes set minimums of six or ten people and can swap in a snowmobile for those who would rather not ski.3 The scheduled rides are compared on snowmobile safaris in Enontekiö.

Questions people ask

How much more is a snowmobile to myself?

On the husky kennel's 20-kilometre tour, 140 euros in high season or 125 in low season against 80 sharing. On Näkkälä Eräpalvelut's 22-kilometre safari, 130 against 95, and on its 50-kilometre safari 195 against 155. The kennel does not say which weeks are high season; Näkkälä gives a single solo price.

Does the Kilpisjärvi private tour make sense from Hetta?

Only if you are going that way anyway. It is a three-hour, 30-kilometre private ride to the point where Finland, Sweden and Norway meet, for one to four guests, listed from 155 euros without saying whether that is per person, and it asks for a refundable 600-euro deposit per snowmobile. With over two hours of driving each way from Hetta, it is a day trip in itself.

Is the spring overnight tour private for a party of four?

The husky kennel does not say so. Its two-day snowmobile tours need at least four people unless you are also buying one of its husky trips, and a party of four meets that minimum, but the page does not promise that nobody else joins. Ask when you book whether your four would be the whole group; the tours run from the third week of March to mid-May.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
