Ice fishing price from Salla: what each trip costs a family

The short answer

If the snowmobile ride is part of what you want, the Salla trip is fairly priced for a half day out, and sharing a sledge is the cheaper way. If you only want to fish, the two-hour trip at a Kemijärvi resort costs a family much less, with clothing and licences included, and pays for the drive.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Salla: snowmobile and pondKemijärvi: resort lakeKemijärvi: evening
Adult €141 €83 – the lowest adult fare €100
Child €92 €35 – the lowest child fare Not stated
Two adults, two children €466 €236 – the lowest family total €400
Length 3–4 h 2 h 2.5 h

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest adult fare, the lowest child fare and the lowest family total. The Salla adult fare is for two sharing a sledge. The family total assumes two children aged four to eleven; for the evening trip it assumes children pay the adult price, since no child fare is printed. The drive to Kemijärvi is not counted.

Where these figures come from
  • Salla: snowmobile and pond: Three to four hours from the fell resort, priced per sledge, with a child fare from three to eleven.
  • Kemijärvi: resort lake: Two hours beside Jauri Resort with clothing, licences and gear included, and under-threes free.
  • Kemijärvi: evening: Two and a half hours of evening fishing by a campfire, priced per person with no child fare printed.

The Salla ice fishing trip is priced like a snowmobile safari, and that is what makes it dearer than the fishing trips a short drive away.

Salla: priced by the sledge

Sallatunturin Tuvat charges 141 euros each when two share a sledge, and 92 for a child from three to eleven, for three to four hours including the ride and a picnic lunch.1

Kemijärvi: priced for the fishing

Jauri Resort’s two hours on the lake beside it cost 83 euros an adult and 35 a child from four to eleven, with under-threes free and clothing and licences included.2 Lappi Creative’s evening trip is priced per person, between the two.

Questions people ask

What does riding alone cost on the Salla trip?

184 euros for one person on a sledge, against 141 each when two share one. The difference buys a machine of your own and a whole damage excess of 890 euros instead of half of one. Riding alone makes sense for an experienced driver travelling without a companion, not for saving money.

Is anything extra to pay on the ice?

Not for ordinary one-rod fishing through the ice, which needs no permit in Finland. The Salla trip includes the ride, the fishing and a picnic lunch with coffee; the Kemijärvi resort's trip includes clothing, licences, gear and a warm drink. Bring cash or a card only for anything you buy afterwards.

Are the Kemijärvi prices worth the drive?

For a family of four the saving on the two-hour Kemijärvi trip covers the fuel for the round trip of about 130 km many times over. It is a different outing, though: no snowmobile, less time on the ice. Choose on the day you want, and let the price settle a close call.

Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
