Family ice fishing in Ylitornio: what works with children

The short answer

With children of four or more, book the snowmobile and ice-fishing trip from the Ylitornio activity centre. With younger children, the pond day in Keminmaa is designed for all ages, with sledging between bites. If you fish on your own as a family, the children owe no fishing fee, since it applies from eighteen; check the rules for the water, which is the adults' question.

Around Ylitornio, the age limit, the cold and the fishing rules decide a family’s day on the ice more than the price does.

Who can come

The activity centre on Kopanmäentie takes children from four on its three-hour snowmobile and ice-fishing trip. The Keminmaa pond is designed for all ages and fills the day with sledging and soup; the Kukkola rapids outing near Tornio sets no age.

The fee that children never pay

If you fish as a family on your own, the fisheries management fee on this stretch of Lapland applies to anglers aged 18 to 69 who fish with a lure, so no child owes it.1 Whether the adults do depends on the method and the water, which is covered on ice fishing in Ylitornio.

When it is very cold

The Tornio company reserves the right to shorten a programme with children aboard at minus twenty or colder.2 The other trips print no temperature rule, so ask what happens on a bitter day before you set out.

Questions people ask

How do children travel on the snowmobile trip?

The activity centre's booking page gives the trip's age as four and up and its length as three hours, and says nothing about whether children ride behind a driver or in a towed sled. Down the valley, the Tornio snowmobile company carries children of four to fourteen in a sledge behind a parent's machine, but that is its rule, not this centre's, so ask when you book.

Do children pay less?

None of the trips near Ylitornio publishes a child price. The Tornio rapids outing is 95 euros a head and the Keminmaa pond 120, both printed per person with no child fare beside them, and the Ylitornio trip shows its price only in a dated calendar. Ask each seller for a child rate before you add up the family's cost.

Is winter clothing lent for children?

Only one trip within reach says it lends clothing at all: the Kemi sea trip by snowmobile lends a winter outfit and helmet, without saying whether children's sizes are stocked. The Ylitornio trip, the Kukkola rapids and the Keminmaa pond say nothing about clothing. Pack full winter gear for the children, with spare mittens, since wet hands end a day on the ice faster than anything else.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
