The best Santa Claus visit from Tornio, by who is going

The short answer

Take a toddler to the Santa station in Ylitornio, where the under-fours go free. For a child who likes making things, Ylitornio too, with its craft session added. For teenagers, a couple or anyone who just wants the meeting, drive to Rovaniemi, where walking in to see Santa costs nothing. For a meeting away from the crowds, look at the private visits sold from Rovaniemi, which nothing nearer Tornio offers.

From Tornio there are three kinds of Santa visit within a day’s reach, and the right one depends on who is in the back seat.

A toddler

Ylitornio’s Santa station, 49 minutes up the river. Children up to three go free, so the smallest member of the party costs nothing and gets a day built for exactly their age.1

A child who likes making things

Ylitornio again, with its Creative Hour added. The day ticket already includes some crafts; the separate session, at 15 to 18 euros a head, is the one to book for a child who would rather make something than queue for anything.

Teenagers, couples, or just the meeting

Rovaniemi, an hour and a half away. Admission to Santa’s office there is free every day of the year, so a party of adults pays for the drive and nothing else.2 How the visit works is on meeting Santa Claus in Rovaniemi.

A meeting without the crowd

Only Rovaniemi sells private visits, priced in ways that need turning into one figure for your family before they can be compared. Private Santa visit in Rovaniemi does that sum.

Questions people ask

Which is best for photographs with Santa?

Neither place includes a finished photograph. At Ylitornio a printed photo with Santa is one of the extras on the listing, with no price given. At the Rovaniemi office the meeting is free and the pictures are the business, from 55 euros for a downloadable set for up to five people, with no obligation to buy. Either way, bring your own camera and ask whether you may use it.

Is Ylitornio worth it for teenagers?

Probably not on its own. A teenager pays the full ticket, the same as an adult, and most of what it buys, the gingerbread, the hobby reindeer and the crafts, is aimed at young children. A teenager travelling with younger siblings will cost the full price for a day that is not really for them, which is a point in favour of the free office in Rovaniemi for mixed-age families.

Can we combine a Santa visit with reindeer?

At Ylitornio it is already combined: feeding the reindeer is part of the day ticket. In Rovaniemi, reindeer are a separate booking at a farm, which this site compares on its Rovaniemi reindeer pages. From Tornio, that makes Ylitornio the one-stop day, and Rovaniemi the choice only if you are prepared to fit a farm visit around the drive as well.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
