The short answer

A group of six should book every place on the small tour capped at six and ask in writing that no one else is added. A couple or a single rider can at least have their own machine by booking the solo fare. Four or more experienced riders who want a whole day should ask the hotel whether its full-day tour can run for their group alone.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Small tour, six seatsResort, own machineHotel, full day
Route to private Book all six places Not possible; own machine only Ask for your group alone
Group Up to 6 Not stated 4 or more
Own snowmobile On request Sold, 18+ Always
Price €179 per person From €120.84 per person From €680 per person

Nothing is marked: none of these is sold as a private tour, and each price buys a different length of day, so a lower price is not a better route to having the trail alone.

Where these figures come from
  • Small tour, six seats: Three hours with about an hour and a half of driving, capped at six guests and collected from your door.
  • Resort, own machine: A four-hour tour with at least two and a half hours of riding, where one adult can book a machine alone.
  • Hotel, full day: Six hours for experienced riders, each on their own snowmobile, run for a minimum of four people.

None of the snowmobile tours read for this page is sold for one party alone, but there are three ways to get close to it.

Fill a small tour

Northwild caps its three-hour tour at six guests and collects them in Saariselkä and around Ivalo, so a group of six that books every place rides without strangers.1

A machine, or a day, to yourselves

Kakslauttanen, the resort south of the village, sells a fare for one adult on a snowmobile of their own, which keeps a stranger off your seat though not off the trail.2 Wilderness Hotel Saariselkä’s full day already gives every rider a machine and runs only for four or more, so a group of four or more experienced riders can ask for a departure of their own.3

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

How much more does a snowmobile of my own cost?

Neither the resort nor, for its shorter tours, the hotel prints the solo fare on its activity page; it appears only as a separate fare in the booking calendar. The small tour arranges a single driver on request. Price it before you decide, and remember that riding alone means driving the whole way, with no passenger turn to rest in.

What does the group need to bring?

Every driver needs a valid driving licence and must be eighteen or over. On the small tour, thermal clothing is not provided, so rent or bring overalls, boots and mittens for everyone; helmets and hand warmers are lent. At the resort, thermal clothing and driving gear are included in the price.

Can the whole group be collected?

The small tour picks up in Saariselkä and around Ivalo. The resort's transfer runs from and to the resort, so a group staying in the village first has to reach it. The hotel lists no transfer for its full day, so ask it where the day starts and whether it can collect your group.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
