The short answer

For a first ride, book the two-hour guided safari at Lammintupa: shared machines, a snack and a clear set of rules. For a longer day in the forest, take the same village's four-hour safari with a campfire. The ski resort's electric snowmobile ride suits guests staying in Ruka Valley or on the gondola side who want a quiet machine, and the scenic safari with pick-up suits guests without a car.

No row is ranked: the two village safaris differ in length rather than value, and the listings without an excess figure may simply not print it.

Where these figures come from
  • Lammintupa: 2 hours: A guided safari on shared machines from the winter village's safari house, with a snack on the way.
  • Lammintupa: 4 hours: The same village's longer safari, on shared machines, with a campfire stop.
  • Ruka Guides: electric: Electric snowmobiles from the ski resort's own activity centre in Ruka Valley, with a free gondola ride there from the village side.
  • Ruka Adventures: scenic: A scenic safari with pick-up from three places in the resort.

Snowmobile rides at Ruka are sold from three kinds of place: the winter village at Lammintupa, the ski resort’s own activity centre and the safari companies that collect guests from their accommodation.

The winter village

Lammintupa sells a two-hour and a four-hour safari from its safari house, both on shared machines. The driver must be at least eighteen with a valid licence, nobody under 140 cm is taken along, and the listings print a self-liability of €1,000 for damage in an accident.12

The ski resort’s electric machines

Ruka Guides, the ski resort’s activity company, sells rides on electric snowmobiles from its centre in Ruka Valley. Guests staying in Ruka Village or on the Ruka West side get a free gondola ride there and back, and the listing sets the youngest participant at five.3

With pick-up

Ruka Adventures sells a scenic safari with pick-up from three places in the resort, and its listing asks the driver to carry a physical driving licence during the ride.4

Choosing

The village’s two-hour safari is the straightforward first ride; the four-hour one is for adults who want a proper stretch of forest. The electric ride is the quiet option and the easiest to reach from the gondola side of the resort. The scenic safari is the one to book without a car, but ask its length before paying, because the listing does not print it.

Questions people ask

What if the snowmobile is damaged?

The winter village's safaris print a self-liability of €1,000 in case of an accident, which is the amount you would pay towards damage to the machine. The other listings compared here print no figure, so ask before you ride, and check whether your travel insurance covers driving a snowmobile, because many policies exclude motor vehicles unless you add cover.

Can we cancel if the weather turns?

All four rides here are sold on GetYourGuide with free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start and a full refund inside that window. After that the platform does not refund, so if a storm is forecast, decide the day before rather than on the morning of the ride.

Do we need to bring a licence from home?

Yes, the physical card. The village's listings ask for a valid driving licence and a driver aged at least eighteen, and the scenic safari's listing asks for the licence to be carried during the ride. A photo on a phone is not a licence, so pack the card, and check that it is valid for driving in Finland if it was issued outside Europe.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
