Santa Claus in Muonio: where the meeting is sold

The short answer

If you are coming to Muonio for Christmas anyway, the local package is the way to meet Santa: each family meets him on its own in his cabin, and every child gets a small gift. If you are staying in Muonio on your own arrangements, drive to Levi and book one of its visits there, where a private family meeting or a whole afternoon at an elf park is sold per person. Rovaniemi, where the office is free, is much further.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: only your family with Santa. The price row is not ranked: the package price covers three or four nights with meals, clothing and several activities, and cannot be set against the price of a single visit.

Where these figures come from
  • Harriniva Christmas package: Santa in his cabin, one family at a time, with snow games while you wait and a small gift for each child, inside a stay of three or four nights.
  • Arctic Shaman Adventures, Levi: A private family meeting of about half an hour, reached by a snowmobile sleigh ride across a lake near Levi.
  • Arcandia Elf Court, Levi: Three hours at an elf park with a guide of your own, reindeer, gingerbread and sledging, with Santa as one part of it.

Muonio has a Santa Claus, and the only way in to see him is to book Christmas.

The meeting inside the package

Harriniva’s Christmas package puts a two-hour Santa visit into a stay of three or four nights. Santa waits in a cabin and meets one family at a time, an elf shows you in, and while the others take their turn the children play in the snow; each child leaves with a small gift.1 The same stay includes a husky ride, a reindeer visit with a short sleigh ride and a snowmobile trip.

If you are not on the package

Then the nearest Santa for sale is in Levi, 46 minutes away. Its visits are sold one at a time on the booking platforms, and they come in two shapes: a short private meeting reached by sleigh, or an afternoon at an elf park where Santa is one stop among several. Both are compared in more detail on Santa Claus in Levi.

Rovaniemi

The free Santa Claus office in Rovaniemi is two and three quarter hours away, set out on meeting Santa Claus in Rovaniemi. From Muonio it is a day’s drive for a meeting that costs nothing at the door. The rest of Muonio is on the Muonio destination page.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can we book the Muonio Santa visit on its own?

Not from anything this site could find. Harriniva's online shop sells its farm visits, its sauna and its summer trips, and no Santa meeting, and the booking platforms list none for Muonio either. The visit appears only in the programme of the Christmas package, so a family already booked into other accommodation would need to ask the company whether it can be added.

When does the Christmas package run?

It takes daily arrivals from 29 November, and the last arrival is on 24 December, with stays of three or four nights. A family hoping to meet Santa in Muonio in the days after Christmas therefore has no local option, and the winter package that starts on 27 December lists reindeer, huskies and snowmobiles but no Santa.

What do we need to pack for the package?

Mostly layers. The package lends every guest a warm winter overall, snow boots with a pair of woollen socks, a balaclava and warm gloves for the whole stay, and asks you to bring the thermal underwear, fleece or wool, warm socks, a hat and thin gloves that go underneath. Flights and trains are not included, but the transfer from Kittilä Airport or Kolari station is.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
