The short answer

With children under about ten, book the forest cabin: it is short, small and built around the children talking to Santa. Without a car, and if you want the famous village, take the resort's guided day to Rovaniemi. With a car and a tight budget, drive the hour to Rovaniemi yourselves, because meeting Santa at his office costs nothing. With teenagers, play the harder Christmas escape room instead.

Ranua’s Santa options all come from one resort, plus the free office an hour away in Rovaniemi. So the question is not which company, but which family.

Children under about ten

Book the cabin in the forest. It is the only option here built entirely around the children: at most eight people per visit, and ten to fifteen minutes in which Santa talks with the children.1 The sleigh ride there is part of the adventure, and the whole outing takes forty-five minutes, which suits a short attention span.

No car, and the famous village

Take the resort’s guided day to Rovaniemi. It is the only trip to the Santa Claus Village sold in Ranua, with a guide, lunch and a printed photo arranged for you. From 5 January plan the date around it, because it then leaves only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.2

A car and a tight budget

Drive to Rovaniemi yourselves. It is about an hour each way, and meeting Santa at his office costs nothing, so the day costs fuel and whatever you choose to buy there. How that meeting works is on meeting Santa Claus in Rovaniemi.

Teenagers

Skip the meeting and play Santa’s Workshop, the harder of the resort’s two Christmas escape rooms, where the party has an hour to mend the machine before Santa can leave.3 It gives older children the Christmas story without the meeting they may feel too old for.

What each of these is, side by side, is on Santa Claus in Ranua.

Questions people ask

Can we do the cabin and the Wildlife Park on the same day?

The timings allow it. The park's ticket is valid for one day and the cabin's sleighs leave between two and six in the afternoon, so a morning with the animals and a late-afternoon visit to Santa fit together. The cabin starts from the resort's Safari House, and its page does not say how far that is from the park gate, so ask the reception when you book.

Is an escape room too hard for young children?

The gentler room, Santa's Chamber, is rated three out of five and the resort expects it to take between half an hour and seventy-five minutes. Santa's Workshop is rated four and is described as the more active of the two. Children under fifteen must play with an adult, so with a young child the Chamber is the one to try, and the room is not locked if anyone wants to stop.

Are the Santa programmes in Salla or Ylitornio worth the drive from Ranua?

Not as a day trip from Ranua. Salla's Arctic Circle programme is about two and a half hours away by road and the Ylitornio Santa station more than two hours, each way, which is longer than the drive to Rovaniemi and back together. They are good programmes for families staying nearer them, and both are compared on this site's pages for those places.
