The short answer

If you have a car, book the farm's rides on its own shop: it is the cheapest way onto the same sleigh. Pay the resort's higher price only for what it adds, which is the transfer to the farm, or a free place for a baby on the short lakeside ride. Before paying anyone, read the cancellation terms, because they differ between the sellers more than the prices do, and none of them refunds a change of plan in the last few days.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person and the lowest total for two adults and two children aged four to fourteen. Prices as each seller prints them. The activity shop's booking form counts every guest at one price, so its family total treats the children as full-price guests.

Where these figures come from
  • Forest safari, farm's shop: The family farm's half-hour sleigh ride through the forest, booked directly. You make your own way to the farm.
  • Forest safari, resort: The same farm's ride sold at the resort reception by email, with the transfer from the resort to the farm in the price.
  • Lakeside ride, activity shop: About 400 metres behind a reindeer company's animals round a frozen lake, starting from the activity company's base in the village.
  • Lakeside ride, resort: The same lakeside ride sold at the resort, reached by a short snowmobile sleigh from the resort, with babies riding free.

Reindeer rides in Ranua are sold by the people who own the reindeer and by two resellers, and the same half hour in a sleigh costs different amounts depending on whom you pay.

What the resellers add

The resort charges 24 euros a head more than the farm for its forest safari,1 and the difference buys the transfer from the resort to the farm.2 On the lakeside ride the resort’s extra buys a short snowmobile sleigh from the resort and a free place for children under three, which the activity company’s shop does not show. The evening version of that ride is 10 euros dearer at the resort. The activity company also resells the farm visit, at 5 euros above the farm’s own price or 19 more again with transport, on Wednesdays and Saturdays only.3

When plans change

The terms differ more than the prices. The farm keeps a 10-euro fee if you cancel three weeks or more ahead and the whole price after that.4 The activity company keeps a fifth from fourteen days out, half from seven, and everything in the last week.5 The resort refunds in full until fourteen days before and nothing after.6 For a trip whose dates may move, the farm’s shop is the cheapest to book and the least forgiving to change.

Questions people ask

Is the farm's five-minute ride worth booking on its own?

It costs 21 euros a head, children under four free, needs at least two people and takes up to ten, and includes photographs with the reindeer and a chance to stroke them with a guide. It is the cheapest way into a reindeer sleigh in Ranua, but also the shortest, and the farm warns that around Christmas you may have to queue for it.

Why does the dusk ride with dinner cost so much more?

The farm sells its reindeer dinner on its own at 50 euros for an adult. Buying the daytime forest safari and that dinner separately would come to 125 euros, so the evening at 160 costs 35 more for riding at dusk and having the two in one sitting. Children of three to fourteen pay 152 for the evening, the only child reduction on any of the farm's rides.

Is the booking platform ever the cheaper place to book?

For adults, sometimes. The activity park by day costs the same 119 euros on the platform as on the operator's shop, but only the shop charges children less, at 99. The park after dark is 149 on the platform and at the resort against 159 on the shop, and the resort also has a child fare. The farm's rides are not sold on the platforms.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
