The short answer

For the least money, have Santa visit your cottage on a day other than Christmas Eve or Christmas Day; it is also the cheapest per minute with him. The reindeer visit and the hidden cabin cost far more, so choose them for the reindeer and the outing, not for more time with Santa. With more than two children, the flat family price makes every visit good value.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

At your cottageWith his reindeerHis hidden cabin
Äkäslompolo, ordinary day €270 – lowest family price €570 €760 at the cabin
Ylläsjärvi, ordinary day €300 €590 Same €760, at the cabin
24 or 25 December €350 or €380 €650 or €670 €790
Per minute with Santa €13.50 – lowest cost per minute €19 €19

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: lowest family price and lowest cost per minute. All prices are for the family and include two children; each further child adds 25 euros. The Christmas prices show Äkäslompolo first, then Ylläsjärvi. The per-minute figure uses the Äkäslompolo price on an ordinary day.

Where these figures come from
  • At your cottage: About twenty minutes of songs and stories indoors, priced by the village you stay in.
  • With his reindeer: About half an hour, starting in your yard with the reindeer, also priced by village.
  • His hidden cabin: About forty minutes at Santa's cabin near Äkäslompolo, one price for everyone who comes.

In Ylläs you pay for Santa by the family, and three things set the price.

Which visit

Moment with Santa prices Santa alone at your door lowest, and a cottage in Ylläsjärvi a little above one in Äkäslompolo.1 With his reindeer the visit costs about twice as much.2

Where and when

The visit to his cabin costs the most, has one price wherever you stay, and like the home visits costs more on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.3

What happens on each visit is described on a private Santa visit in Ylläs.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

When is the money taken?

A 50-euro booking fee is charged when you book, and the full amount of the reservation thirty days before the visit. The shop does not say in the product text whether the fee counts towards the price, so ask; and read its refund policy before booking inside that thirty-day window.

Can we do this without a car?

For the two home visits you need no transport at all, because Santa comes to your cottage. For the hidden cabin your family makes its own way, by taxi or on foot, about four kilometres from the centre of Äkäslompolo, and the taxi is not in the price. Book it for the return too, since the visit ends in the dark.

Do we pay for Santa's travel to our cottage?

No separate travel charge is listed: the price is set by village, Äkäslompolo or Ylläsjärvi, and from 1 December to 7 January the visits are made only in the Ylläs area. Outside those weeks the operator says it can come further, to Levi for example; ask what that costs.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
