Reindeer safari price in Kilpisjärvi: what 70 and 95 euros buy

The short answer

At 95 euros, the safari company's evening is the one to take if you need clothing: the thermal suit and transport are in the price. The farm's two-hour visit at 95 is the one to take if you can walk there and want the stories. The farm's one-hour sleigh visit at 70 is the cheapest reindeer time in the village. Book the safari company through the platform if your plans might change, because its own site keeps the whole price inside a week.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person. All four print a price per person. The farm's visits are booked by enquiry and it publishes no cancellation terms.

Where these figures come from
  • Kilpissafarit (own site): Two hours with a herder, transport from the office and a full thermal set, from half past four to half past six.
  • Kilpissafarit (GetYourGuide): The same evening sold on the booking platform, at the same price, with its own cancellation rule.
  • Kilpis Reindeer: Sámi Experience: About two hours of storytelling and feeding at the family farm in the village, with warm drinks in the Kammi.
  • Kilpis Reindeer: sleigh hour: About an hour at the family farm with a traditional wooden sleigh ride round the farm and a fireside talk.

Three of the four reindeer prices in Kilpisjärvi are the same figure, and what separates them is everything around it.

What 95 euros buys

The safari company’s evening includes transport from its office, a full thermal set, a hot drink and a pastry, and its own site keeps the whole price if you cancel inside the last seven days.1 The same evening on the booking platform can be cancelled free until a day before.2 For anyone whose dates might move, that difference is worth more than any extra.

The farm’s two-hour visit at the same price is a walk away in the village, with no transport to pay for and no clothing lent.

The cheapest time with reindeer

The farm’s one-hour visit at 70 euros includes a wooden sleigh ride round the farm, the only sleigh on offer in the village. For a party that mainly wants to meet the animals, it is the least money for the thing itself.

Questions people ask

What does a family of four pay?

Only the safari company's figure can be added up, because it says rates are the same for everyone: four people pay 380 euros, and all four must be eight or older. Booked on its own site, pick-up within five kilometres adds 8 euros each, 32 in all. The farm prices children on enquiry, so its family total is only known once it replies.

Do we get our money back if the evening does not run?

The safari company's terms say it refunds the whole payment if it cancels for hazardous weather or other compelling reasons, and its tour page says the same for weather. If fewer than four people book, it contacts customers by the day before at the latest and offers either a full refund or a private tour at extra cost, so a small party is never simply charged for an evening that did not happen.

Are there extras at the farm?

The farm offers a traditional reindeer meat soup lunch and a longer private programme as add-ons, and a visit to the Sámi heritage site it is opening on its land, and asks you to enquire about them. It publishes no prices for any of these, so budget for the visit itself and ask about the rest in the same message.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
