Snowmobile safari in Posio: where the nearest machines are

The short answer

You will be driving to ride. Nothing with an engine is on sale under Posio: of the two dozen products listed there, every one is a hike, a photography trip, a husky ride picked up in Rovaniemi, a private aurora car or the sheep farm. The nearest machines are in Ranua, an hour away, where an hour on a snowmobile is 125 euros a head and two hours 185. Salla and Kemijärvi are half an hour further, and Salla prices by the sledge rather than the rider.

Every other destination in this handbook sells a snowmobile safari. Posio sells none, and the gap is worth a page of its own, because the alternative is a drive and the drive is what decides which neighbour you choose.

What is listed instead

Twenty-four products carry Posio’s name on the booking platform. They are hikes into the Korouoma canyon, photography trips up Riisitunturi, a husky ride that collects its guests in Rovaniemi, a private aurora car and a family sheep farm. Not one of them has an engine in it, and no rental appears either.1

The three nearest places, and what they charge

Ranua is about an hour away and sells the shortest ride within reach: an hour on a machine for 125 euros a head, two hours for 185. Kemijärvi is an hour and a half. Salla, also an hour and a half, prices differently, by the sledge rather than the rider, so its two-hour trip to Ruuhitunturi is 139 euros if you ride alone and 220 if two of you share one machine, which is 110 each.

A couple therefore pays 250 euros in Ranua for an hour, or 220 in Salla for two hours and a longer drive. That is the whole calculation, and it is the reason to read the price basis before the number.

What the drive really costs

An hour each way is two hours of a short winter day, and it is the same two hours whether you ride for one hour or three. If snowmobiling matters enough to travel for, take the longer safari once rather than the shorter one twice. If it does not, Posio has a national park at the end of the road and a canyon full of frozen waterfalls, neither of which asks you to drive anywhere first.

What the rest of the Posio listings are is set out on the Posio destination page, and the machines an hour away are described in snowmobile safari in Ranua.

Questions people ask

Is there really no snowmobile safari in Posio?

None was on sale when we counted. The booking platform's Posio page listed 24 products on 23 September 2026, and not one of them involved a snowmobile: they are hikes to Korouoma and Riisitunturi, photography trips, one husky ride that is picked up in Rovaniemi, one private aurora car and a visit to a sheep farm. The supply survey two days earlier found the same thing across GetYourGuide, Viator and the operators' own shops.

Which neighbour is the cheapest for a short ride?

Ranua, both in money and in driving. An hour on a snowmobile at the activity park there is 125 euros a head and two hours 185, and the drive from Posio is about an hour. Salla is an hour and a half away and prices its safaris by the sledge, from 139 euros for one rider on a machine to 220 for two sharing, which changes the arithmetic completely for a couple.

Can we rent a snowmobile and ride by ourselves?

Not through this site, and not through the platforms either: no rental in Posio appears on any of the listings we read. Riding a snowmobile in Finland needs a driving licence, insurance and permission for the route, which is why almost everything sold to visitors is a guided safari on the operator's own machine. If self-drive rental is what you want, ask locally; we found nothing published.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
