Ice fishing in Enontekiö: three ways onto the ice from Hetta

The short answer

For a first try with a group of three or more, book the two hours on Lake Ounasjärvi: it is by far the cheapest ice fishing in Hetta and starts at the edge of the village. For two people, or if you want the ride to be part of it, take the snowmobile trip, which lends a full winter outfit. With children, the guided afternoon from the neighbouring village has the clearest child fare and collects you from your accommodation.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest adult price and collection from your accommodation is included. All three price per person. The snowmobile trip's three prices depend on how you travel; under-18s always ride in the sleigh.

Where these figures come from
  • Näkkälä Adventures: Ounasjärvi: Two hours on the lake Hetta stands on, with rods, bait, a guide and a sausage by the fire; three people needed for it to run.
  • Näkkälä Adventures: by snowmobile: Three to four hours and 20 km of riding to a fishing spot, in a sleigh or at the handlebars, with a full winter outfit lent.
  • Vilu Arctic Experience: Three hours at a lake by a village near Hetta, the drive counted in the time, collected from your accommodation and towed out in a sleigh.

Hetta’s husky kennel does not sell ice fishing, and neither do the booking platforms. Two local companies do, on their own sites.

Three outings, three kinds of afternoon

The cheapest is two hours on Lake Ounasjärvi, the lake Hetta stands on, with the rods, bait and a fire provided.1 The same company’s snowmobile trip turns the fishing into half of a longer outing. The third starts with a pick-up and a short drive to a village lake, the travel counted inside its three hours, where you are towed out in a sleigh behind a snowmobile.2

The permit question

Finland charges nothing for ice fishing with a single rod, but the national table excludes rapids on migratory-fish waters and destinations that need a permit of their own.3 The kennel’s guide to the area says the wilderness areas of Enontekiö need a local permit on top of the fishing fee.4 Neither company says whether its outing covers a permit, so ask when you book, and check before fishing anywhere on your own.

Choosing

Book the Ounasjärvi outing if you have three people and want the least fuss, the snowmobile trip if the ride matters as much as the catch, and the village trip if you have no car or have children. The aurora evenings sold in Hetta are on northern lights in Enontekiö, and the fishing an hour away in Muonio on ice fishing in Muonio.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

What if we have to cancel?

The two companies differ. The one from the neighbouring village refunds everything but a 20-euro administration fee if you cancel seven days or more before the start, and nothing inside that, although you may cancel free if it is colder than minus 32 at the fishing spot. The Hetta lake company's fishing page prints no cancellation terms at all, so ask before you pay.

Is there a longer trip for anglers who mean it?

Yes, from March. The Hetta company runs a day on Pöyrisjärvi in the wilderness at 125 euros a head with a sleigh ride, a helmet and a guide, starting from the village of Näkkälä, with transport from Hetta on request and overalls and boots at 10 euros a day. The other company sells a spring trip of four to six hours further out, at 145 euros for an adult and 65 for a child.

Which lakes do people fish in winter?

The kennel's guide to the area names Lake Ounasjärvi, on which Hetta stands, and Lake Muotkajärvi as the popular ice-fishing lakes, and Enontekiö holds an ice-fishing week in spring. Of the guided outings, only the cheapest names its lake, Ounasjärvi; the others take you to a spot the guide chooses, reached by snowmobile or sleigh.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
