The short answer

The remote lake trip is the cheapest ticket and the cheapest hour on the platforms, but it lends no winter clothing; if you have none, the snowmobile trip that lends it can work out cheaper in practice. The long day is the dearest by the hour. Before booking Arctic SISU on a platform, ask whether the lower prices on its own site apply to your group.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Arctic SISU: remote lakeArctic Wonders: by snowmobileArctic SISU: long day
Per hour €56.67 – the lowest price per hour €60 €70
Family of four €680 – the lowest family total €720 €1400
Not in the price Winter clothing Nothing listed Winter clothing

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per hour and the lowest family total. Per-hour figures divide the per-person price by the listed length. A family of four pays four full prices, since no listing prints a child fare. Own-site prices are left out because their basis is not stated.

Where these figures come from
  • Arctic SISU: remote lake: Three hours collected and driven to a remote lake, the cheapest ticket, with no winter clothing lent.
  • Arctic Wonders: by snowmobile: Three hours out by snowmobile, two to a machine, with winter clothing and a helmet lent.
  • Arctic SISU: long day: Five hours with snowshoeing and a salmon barbecue lunch, the dearest ticket and the dearest hour.

Ice fishing from Sodankylä is priced per person on the platforms, and what a family actually pays depends on what the ticket leaves out.

The cheap ticket and the missing clothing

Arctic SISU’s remote lake trip is the lowest price and the lowest price per hour, but it lends no thermal clothing, which a family that came without winter kit would have to find elsewhere.1 Arctic Wonders’ snowmobile trip costs a little more and lends overalls, boots, gloves and a helmet.2

The long day, and the other price list

The five-hour day with snowshoes and a salmon lunch is the dearest by the hour on the platforms. Arctic SISU’s own booking page lists its ice fishing tour at 150 euros for two hours, and the long day at 249, without saying whether those prices are per person.3

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Should we book Arctic SISU on its own site?

Only after asking what its lower price covers. The platforms print a price per person and free cancellation until a day before; the company's own page prints neither the basis nor its terms. If the answer is per person and the terms are fair, booking directly saves a family a good deal.

Does the snowmobile trip cost extra if we damage the machine?

It can. The listing names an insurance excess of 600 euros per snowmobile in an accident, which is what you would pay towards the damage. Ask what it covers and whether it can be reduced before you ride, since the figure applies to each machine rather than each rider.

Is the fishing gear included?

On the snowmobile trip, yes: the listing names ice fishing equipment. Arctic SISU's listings sell guided ice fishing without itemising the gear, so ask whether rods and bait are provided. You need no permit for ordinary one-rod fishing through the ice in Finland, so there is nothing else to buy.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
