The short answer

In December or January, book the afternoon at the Arctic Circle café: it is small, homely and close by. If your children are shy of other families, or you want Santa's time to yourselves, ask the café for the private version. Outside those months, or on a tight budget, make a day of the free Santa Claus Office in Rovaniemi.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Where these figures come from
  • Arctic Circle café: An afternoon of Santa's post office and cabin, gingerbread with Mrs Santa, then Santa and a family photo.
  • Santa Claus Office, Rovaniemi: The free walk-in meeting at the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi, open all year, nearly two hours' drive west.

Salla has one Santa programme, and the choice is between it, the same visit for your family alone, and a long drive to Rovaniemi.

On the Arctic Circle

The café on the Arctic Circle in Salla runs a guided walk through Santa’s village, gingerbread decorating with Mrs Claus, and a family meeting and photo with Santa, from Monday to Saturday in December and January.1 The same listing offers it to families as a personalised private experience.

In Rovaniemi

The Santa Claus Office in Rovaniemi is free and open all year, and the village around it fills a day.2 It suits families outside the café’s season, and anyone for whom the price is the obstacle.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can we combine the Santa visit with a snowmobile ride?

The fell resort's Arctic Circle snowmobile safari rides to Salla's Arctic Circle sign and stops for soup at the café on the circle, but it is a separate safari for drivers, not a Santa visit. For a family, book the Santa afternoon on its own day and keep the safari for adults or older children.

Can we get to the café without a car?

Not easily from Salla. The listing we read sells the visit with round-trip transport only from Ruka, the ski resort to the south, as a three-and-a-half-hour afternoon. From Salla, ask the café or your accommodation about a transfer, since neither the café nor the regional site mentions one.

Is the Rovaniemi drive worth it for a small child?

It is about an hour and fifty minutes each way, so the visit becomes the whole day. It is worth it if a free meeting and the rest of Santa Claus Village matter more than a quiet day, or if your dates fall outside the café's season. Pack food and a change of clothes for the car.
