The short answer

For the lowest bill, book the short ride at the Konijänkkä farm outside the holiday weeks, if you can get there and dress the children yourselves. If you need the transfer and the clothing, the ride near Ylläsjärvi includes both for not much more. Pay for the wilderness ride only if the longer time in the sleigh is what your family wants.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: lowest adult fare, lowest child fare and lowest family total. Holiday weeks are 13 December to 3 January and 31 January to 28 February. Family totals assume two children within each ride's child age band.

Where these figures come from
  • Konijänkkä farm ride: A short ride and feeding at the Konijänkkä farm, with a child fare from two.
  • Remote farm: About 1.5 km in the sleigh at a farm half an hour's drive away, child fare from four.
  • Farm near Ylläsjärvi: A two-kilometre ride with the transfer and the winter clothing in the price.
  • Wilderness ride: Three kilometres in the sleigh, collected free in Äkäslompolo, clothing lent.

What a reindeer ride costs a family around Ylläs depends on the length of the ride and on what the ticket leaves you to arrange.

Questions people ask

Does a teenager pay the child fare?

Not beyond twelve on three of the rides, whose child fares run to twelve; the short Konijänkkä ride ends its child fare at eleven. A thirteen-year-old pays as an adult on all four, so a family with teenagers should price them at the adult fare.

Is there a deposit to pay?

The Konijänkkä operator takes 20 per cent at booking and the rest thirty days before the ride, and animal activities cannot be refunded after that. The Äkäslompolo company lets you cancel free until the afternoon before. Ask the Ylläsjärvi company for its terms before paying.

How much does the transfer add where it is not included?

The Äkäslompolo company collects free in its village and charges 25 euros a person return from Ylläsjärvi, for four or more. The Ylläsjärvi company collects only in its own village and puts a taxi from Äkäslompolo at about 59 euros one way for up to four. The Konijänkkä rides do not list a transfer.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
