The short answer

Book the family kennel if you want the dogs, the guide and the trail to your own party: it runs one group at a time and takes as few as two. A party of four or more that wants the lent winter clothing can ask the wilderness park whether a departure can be held for it alone. For a ride longer than two hours, ask the kennel what it can arrange.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Family kennelWilderness park
Sold as private Yes – one group at a time No
Group size 2 to 6 4 to 20
Winter clothing Your own Lent
Longer rides By appointment 4 h and 5–6 h sold

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: one group at a time. Only the private listing is marked, because it is the one sold to a single group. Prices for both are on the husky price page for Salla.

Where these figures come from
  • Family kennel: Sold only as a private ride, one group of two to six at a time, in your own warm clothes.
  • Wilderness park: Scheduled departures for four to twenty guests, with the winter clothing lent and not sold as private.

In Salla a private husky ride is the product itself rather than an extra, and it comes from a small kennel rather than the park in the village.

The family kennel

Sallan Huskyt runs its Siberian huskies from a farm about five kilometres from the village. It takes one group of two to six at a time, gives a driving lesson, and sends you about ten kilometres with a half-hour stop at a hut halfway. Longer runs of four hours or more are arranged by appointment.1

A group at the park

Salla Wilderness Park sells its rides to groups of four to twenty and lends the winter clothing.2 A party large enough to fill a departure can ask whether it will run for them alone, but the park does not sell that as private.

The shared rides are compared on the best husky tour in Salla.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

How do we book the family kennel?

By appointment, through the contact form on its site, by e-mail or by phone; there is no calendar to book from. Give your dates, the size of your group and the ages of any children, and ask for a time. Its page says it prefers payment by the common credit cards.

What should we wear, if nothing is lent?

Dress as for a long winter walk and then some: wool next to the skin, a warm mid layer, a windproof outer layer, winter boots with room for thick socks, mittens over thin gloves, a hat and a neck warmer. Driving a sled is active, but the stop at the hut halfway is spent standing and sitting still.

Can we stay longer at the hut?

Probably, since nobody else's timetable depends on it, but ask when you book rather than on the trail. The hut has a fire where you can cook your own food, so bring something to grill if you want to make a meal of the stop, and tell the kennel so it can plan the dogs' rest around it.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
