Best ice fishing from Ylitornio: one pick for each wish

The short answer
To stay local, book the snowmobile and ice-fishing trip from the Ylitornio activity centre. For a known price and a fire on the river, drive to the Kukkola rapids near Tornio. For the old way of fishing, the burbot-net outing at the same rapids needs a group of four. With small children, the pond day in Keminmaa is the gentlest, and for the sea, the snowmobile trip from Kemi.
Ylitornio has one ice-fishing trip of its own. The others worth the drive are down the valley, and each suits a different wish.
To stay in Ylitornio
The activity centre on Kopanmäentie sells three hours of snowmobiling and ice fishing combined, from age four.1 Its price shows only once you choose a date.
For a fishing tradition
At the Kukkola rapids near Tornio, one outing lifts the burbot nets set under the ice, the way the river has been fished for generations.2 It runs for groups of four or more; the plain two-hour outing at the same rapids suits smaller parties and costs less.
For small children, or for the sea
The Keminmaa pond is built for families, with soup and sledging between bites, and the Kemi trip goes by snowmobile onto the Bothnian Bay. Both are compared on ice fishing in Kemi; the local trip and the rules for fishing on your own are on ice fishing in Ylitornio.
Questions people ask
Which trip gives the most time on the ice?
The pond day in Keminmaa is the longest at five hours, and those hours include the transport, a salmon soup and time for sledging. The Ylitornio snowmobile trip lasts three hours, the burbot-net outing two to three, and the Kukkola rapids and the Kemi sea trip two each. If fishing time is what you are buying, ask each operator how long you actually spend at the hole.
Do we need to bring our own gear?
The Tornio outing at the rapids includes the equipment, and the Kemi sea trip lends a full winter outfit and helmet. The Ylitornio activity centre, the burbot-net outing and the Keminmaa pond do not say what they provide, so ask. Warm boots and mittens are worth packing whichever you choose, since two hours sitting still on ice is colder than it sounds.
Which is best in March?
Any of them, if the ice holds, but the Tornio outings give their season only up to the end of March. None of the others prints a season. Late winter brings ice-fishing competitions to villages on both sides of the valley, according to Aava Sky Village, which is another way to see the tradition if your trip falls then.
