Private ice fishing in Enontekiö: what is on offer and what to ask

The short answer

Ask before you book. The company from the neighbouring village arranges private spring trips for arctic char on request, and its general terms send groups larger than its online booking allows to a private tour; neither is priced on its pages. If you want a published private price, the nearest is a guide in Kilpisjärvi, 132 minutes away, whose private trip starts at 400 euros for one person and 800 for five.

Nobody in Hetta sells a private ice-fishing trip with a price on it. There are still three ways to get the guide to yourselves.

Ask for the spring char trip

The company from the neighbouring village sells shared trips, but arranges private ones for arctic char in spring on request.1 Its general terms also send larger groups to a private tour rather than the online shop.2 Neither comes with a price until you ask.

Fill a departure yourselves

A group of three can book the Ounasjärvi outing, and a family of up to nine the village trip. That can leave you alone with the guide on a quiet day, but nothing promises it.

Drive to a guide with a price list

Kilpisjärvi, 132 minutes up the road, has a guide who sells private trips only, priced per group, with a fish-finder and a full set of clothes included.3 It is the closest published private price, and it is a long day’s drive for three or four hours on the ice. The shared trips in Hetta are compared on ice fishing in Enontekiö.

Questions people ask

If our group is big enough, do we get the trip to ourselves anyway?

Not by right. The Ounasjärvi outing needs three people and the village trip takes up to nine, so a family of three or more may find itself alone on a quiet date, but neither page promises that only your group will be there. If that matters, say so when you book and ask for it in writing; a company that can offer it will tell you the price.

What does the Kilpisjärvi private trip include?

Three to four hours with a guide for your group only, winter overalls, boots, socks, hat, mittens, balaclava and helmet, all the fishing gear including fish-finder electronics, photos by the guide, a sleigh ride out and coffee or tea with a pastry. The price climbs by a hundred euros per person from 400 for one to 800 for five, and a snowmobile you drive yourselves costs 100 euros more.

Is Muonio any closer for a private trip?

Closer, at 54 minutes, but not priced. A company near Muonio sells its fishing in a heated tent to private groups of two to five and says it opens winter sales closer to the season, so there was no figure to compare when this page was written. It is worth an email if Kilpisjärvi is too far for a day trip.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
