Best snowmobile tour in Muonio: which one suits your party

The short answer

First time on a snowmobile: the two-hour loop at Nivunki Village. A rider who wants a real day out: the same village's five hours to the old mill. Aurora first: its four-hour evening up Särkitunturi, which spends longer in the dark than its two-hour evening ride. Small children: a family package at Harriniva, where they ride in the guide's sleigh. Travelling alone: the single-driver price, or Levi's wider choice.

Every snowmobile ride in Muonio is a guided one, so the choice is less about the machine than about how long you want on it and who is riding with you.

First time on a snowmobile

The two-hour loop at Nivunki Village is built for beginners: twenty kilometres across forest and a frozen lake to a kota, where you warm up by the fire.1 It is the shortest ride on the village’s timetable, and enough to know whether you want more.

A rider who wants the whole day

The same village’s trip to the old mill at Äkäsmylly is five hours and fifty kilometres. It is the tour for a party that has ridden before, or one that did the short loop earlier in the week and came back wanting more.

Aurora first

The village runs two evening rides. The four-hour one climbs to the fell Särkitunturi and keeps you out longer in the dark; the two-hour one leaves at eight and is cheaper. The longer one gives the sky more time to clear.

Small children

No Muonio seller of single rides says where a child would sit. Harriniva’s family packages do: adults drive and children ride in a sleigh pulled by the guide’s machine.2 They are holidays of three nights or more rather than an afternoon out.

Travelling alone

Every village ride has a single-driver price, which is the way to have a machine to yourself. For a wider choice of departures, Levi is 46 minutes away; its tours are ranked on best snowmobile tour in Levi. The full Muonio table is on snowmobile safari in Muonio.

Questions people ask

Which tour can we book on the day?

None is sold as a walk-up ride. Nivunki Village runs each tour on fixed days of the week, the two-hour loop on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and the old-mill day on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and it sets a minimum group of four unless a tour says otherwise, so book ahead and plan your days around the timetable.

Does a beginner need the short loop before the long day?

The village does not require it: it describes the short loop as suitable for beginners and says nothing about experience for the old-mill day, while it recommends previous snowmobiling experience only for its six-hour, eighty-kilometre tour sold on request. Doing the short loop first costs a morning and tells you whether five hours is a day you will enjoy.

What does the driver need to bring?

A driving licence, carried on the day. The village asks that a foreign licence be in the Latin alphabet or come with a translation into Finnish, Swedish, English, German, French or Spanish, and the resort packages ask for a category B car licence and a driver of at least eighteen, so check the card in your wallet before you leave home.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
