The short answer

A family with a car and its own winter clothing pays least for the most time in the sleigh by booking the longer ride at the reindeer park. A family that needs both the transfer and the clothing should price the safari sold from Luosto as well, because those come with its ticket. With small children, the shortest ride at the park is the cheapest outing of all.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Half an hourAn hourEvening rideSafari from Luosto
Adult €109 – lowest adult fare €129 €199 From €163
Child €59, 3 to 12 – lowest child fare €79, 3 to 12 €139, 4 to 12 €82, 4 to 14
Adult, per minute in the sleigh €3.63 €2.15 €3.32 to €4.42 Not stated
Two adults, two children €336 – lowest family total €416 €676 €490
The same, with transfer and clothing €456 – lowest with transfer and clothing €536 €796 €490

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: lowest adult fare, lowest child fare, lowest family total and lowest with transfer and clothing. Family totals assume two children within each ride's child age band. The last row adds the farm's 20-euro transfer and 10-euro clothing hire for all four; the Luosto safari includes both.

Where these figures come from
  • Half an hour: Thirty minutes in the sleigh at the reindeer park, with a farm visit, for children from three.
  • An hour: A full hour in the sleigh at the same park, with the same farm visit afterwards.
  • Evening ride: Forty-five minutes to an hour in the sleigh after dark, with hot drinks and snacks.
  • Safari from Luosto: A ride with a herder, sold with the transfer from Luosto and a thermal outfit in the price.

What a reindeer ride costs a family depends on what it already has with it.

On the ticket

The half-hour ride at the reindeer park is the cheapest outing overall.1 The hour at the same park gives the most time in a sleigh per euro of the three rides with a stated length,2 and the evening ride is the dearest.3

With the extras

Lapland Safaris’ safari includes the transfer from Luosto and a thermal outfit, so for a family that needs both it costs less than the hour at the park and not much more than the half hour.4

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

What does a baby cost?

The reindeer park's two daytime rides take no child under three, and its evening ride sells no fare below four, so a baby cannot come along there. Lapland Safaris sells the Luosto safari with its own category for children up to three, but the fare only shows once a child of that age is added, so check it in the booking form.

Is there a teenager's fare?

No. At the reindeer park a child's fare ends at twelve and anyone from thirteen pays as an adult. On the Luosto safari children pay the child fare up to fourteen, which makes it the cheaper choice for a family with a thirteen- or fourteen-year-old.

What can we cancel?

The reindeer park charges the full price for a cancellation or no-show within seven days. Lapland Safaris charges 25 euros for a cancellation eight days or more before and the full price from seven days. A family whose plans might move should book neither until the week is settled.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
