Northern lights tour prices in Kemi

The short answer

For the most time out for the money, take one of the two 99-euro evenings: the chase that lists three to five hours works out between 19.80 and 33 euros an hour, and the fireside hut four hours for 24.75. The chase is also the one that promises your money back in bad weather. Pay more only if you want the snowmobile night, which costs 75 euros an hour, or the sausage and campfire evening that lends winter clothing.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person. All four price per person. The per-hour column divides the listed price by the listed hours; the chase gives a range rather than a length, so it gets a range. Only the price row is marked, because an evening that ends early is not automatically worse.

Where these figures come from
  • e-Coach: the chase: Three to five hours, picked up from your accommodation and driven to one or more spots, with money back in bad weather. The lowest hour if it runs to five.
  • Lapland Salmon Lodge: fireside: Four hours at the darkest, highest point in the area, with a fireplace, drinks and a photographer. The same ticket price as the chase, spread over a fixed four hours.
  • Sea Lapland Safaris: by car: Two and a half hours away from the town lights with a campfire, a sausage and winter clothing lent when needed. Sixteen euros more than the long evenings and half the time.
  • Sea Lapland Safaris: snowmobile night: Two hours over forest and frozen bay, sold as a snowmobile ride with the aurora as a possibility. The dearest hour of the four.

The four aurora evenings priced here are the ones on the booking platforms, and three of them cost within sixteen euros of each other. The hours do not match at all, so the ticket price says less here than usual.

What an hour out costs

e-Coach’s chase is 99 euros for a listing that says three to five hours: 33 euros an hour if it ends early, 19.80 if it runs long. Lapland Salmon Lodge’s fireside evening is the same 99 euros for a fixed four hours, 24.75 an hour. Sea Lapland Safaris’ tour by car costs 46 an hour and its snowmobile night 75, three times the fireside hour.

What the guarantee is worth

Only the chase mentions money back, and its listing puts the promise and its limit in the same place: a money-back guarantee in case of bad weather, and a note that a sighting cannot be guaranteed. Read together, that covers a night the weather cancels, not a clear night with nothing in the sky. It is still the only refund on offer among the four, and it comes with the lowest hour.

What two people pay

Each of the four prices per person and none shows a group rate in our record, so a couple pays 198 euros on either of the 99-euro evenings, 230 on the tour by car and 300 on the snowmobile night. The tour by car is also sold by a Kemi travel agency at 135 euros an adult with the hotel pick-up and a child fare of 90, which makes it 270 for a couple. The difference between the cheapest and the dearest pair is about the price of a third ticket on the chase.

What each evening is actually like, where you wait and how each one looks for clear sky is compared on the northern lights in Kemi, the snowmobile rides on snowmobile safaris in Kemi, and the rest of the town on the Kemi destination page.

What an hour costs on each ride, and what driving alone adds where a listing prints it, is worked out in snowmobile safari prices in Kemi.

Questions people ask

What does the money-back guarantee actually cover?

The wording is about the weather, not the sky. e-Coach's listing promises money back in case of bad weather and says in the same breath that a sighting cannot be guaranteed. So a clear, quiet night with no aurora is not covered, and cloud that stops the tour going out is. None of the other three evenings mentions a refund in our record.

What does a couple pay?

Twice the listed price on all four, because each prices per person and none of them shows a group rate in our record: 198 euros on either of the 99-euro evenings, 230 on the tour by car and 300 on the snowmobile night. No private car hunt is sold from Kemi; the private evenings nearby, a sleigh on the sea ice off Ii and a ride on request from the safari house, are on the private aurora page.

Do we need our own winter clothes?

On one listing the answer is printed: the tour by car lends overalls, shoes, wool socks and gloves when required, and it is the most expensive of the three car-based evenings. The chase and the fireside hut do not mention clothing in our record, so dress for standing still in the cold and ask if you have nothing warm.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
