The short answer

Without a car, book the Kemi farm visit through the travel agency: it collects you from your hotel, dresses everyone, and children aged three to eleven pay 95 euros, so two adults and two children pay 480. With a car and children who want half an hour in the sleigh, the Ranua farm's forest safari costs 300 for four, with under-threes free. The reindeer business in Ylitornio sits between, at about 461 for four, with children under three free.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest total for two adults and two children aged four to eleven. The family total is for children aged four to eleven, the band every seller that prints a child fare covers. Where no child fare is printed, the total is left as not stated rather than charged at the adult rate.

Where these figures come from
  • Kemi visit via Taxari: The Kemi farm visit booked through the travel agency: hotel pick-up in Kemi, winter gear for everyone and a fare for children aged three to eleven.
  • Kemi visit on the platform: The same afternoon booked on the platform: cheaper per adult, meets at the safari house, lends clothing, but prints no child fare.
  • Team Rudolf, Ylitornio: Feeding, an introduction to herding and a sleigh ride in Ylitornio, 68 minutes away, with children to fourteen at a lower fare.
  • Vaara forest safari, Ranua: Half an hour in the sleigh from a family farm in Ranua, 82 minutes away, one price for everyone from three and nothing below.

What a reindeer afternoon costs a family depends less on the farm than on who sells it, and on whether you have a car.

Without a car

The Kemi farm visit is the only one you can reach without driving, and it is sold two ways. Booked through the Kemi travel agency, it collects you from your hotel, lends every member of the family overalls, boots, gloves and a helmet, and charges children aged three to eleven 95 euros.1 Two adults and two children pay 480 euros. The booking platform sells the same afternoon for less per adult but prints no child fare, so a family cannot price it there.

With a car

The reindeer business in Ylitornio charges children up to fourteen a lower fare and lets infants ride free; four people pay 461.16 euros, plus 18 each if you rent its thermal clothing.2 The farm in Ranua charges everyone from three the same 75 euros for its half-hour forest safari, and nothing below,3 which makes it the cheapest for a family at 300 euros, with half an hour in the sleigh.

The drive

Ylitornio is 68 minutes from Kemi and Ranua 82, each way. With small children, that is the real cost of the cheaper ride. How the Kemi visit compares with the drives on the ride itself is on the best reindeer tour from Kemi.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Is there a baby or toddler option?

The travel agency's reindeer page prices children from three; its general terms make children up to three free. The Ylitornio business lets infants up to two ride free and the Ranua farm does the same up to two on its forest safari. None says how a baby travels in the sleigh or whether one is allowed in it, so ask, and plan for one adult to stay by the fire if the answer is no.

Do children need their own winter gear?

Not in Kemi: both sellers of the farm visit lend clothing, and the travel agency lists overalls, boots, socks, an under-cap, gloves and a helmet for everyone. The Ylitornio business rents a thermal set for 18 euros a person, which for a family of four adds 72 euros. The Ranua farm's forest safari page does not mention clothing, so dress the children for sitting still in the cold.

What if our children are twelve or older?

Then the fares change. The travel agency's child fare stops at eleven, so a twelve-year-old pays the adult 145 euros. The Ylitornio business charges the child fare up to fourteen and the Ranua farm charges everyone from three upwards the same 75 euros. For a family with teenagers, the Ranua safari is the cheapest of the three by a clear margin.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
