The best Santa Claus visit from Kemi, by what you want from it

The short answer

With toddlers and a day to fill, drive to the Santa station in Ylitornio, where the under-fours go free. For Santa to yourselves, book the river house in the same village. For a journey that is part of the magic, book Ranua Resort's sleigh ride to Santa's cabin. If the meeting alone is the point, Rovaniemi's office costs nothing. Nothing in Kemi itself sells a meeting with him.

Nothing in Kemi sells a meeting with Santa, as Santa Claus from Kemi explains. Within a drive there are four, and they are four different kinds of visit.

A toddler, and a day to fill

The Santa station in Ylitornio, 68 minutes from Kemi, sells a ticket for the day rather than an appointment, and children up to three go free.1 Santa, reindeer to feed and crafts all come with the one ticket, which suits a small child who needs the afternoon broken into pieces.

Santa to yourselves

In the same village, Santa’s River House reserves a time for your party alone, with Santa and Mrs Claus in their riverside home for an hour and a half.2 What else counts as private near Kemi, and what does not, is on private Santa visit from Kemi.

A journey that is part of it

Ranua, 82 minutes away, is the one where getting to Santa is an event: a sleigh pulled by a snowmobile takes you about fifteen minutes into the forest, a lantern-lit path leads to a hidden cabin, and the children spend ten to fifteen minutes with him inside.3 Each visit takes up to eight people.

Just the meeting

Rovaniemi, 87 minutes away, is the choice for teenagers, a couple or a family that wants the meeting without a programme around it: the office there is free and open every day. How the visit works is on meeting Santa Claus in Rovaniemi.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Which visit still runs after New Year?

Ranua's sleigh ride to the cabin runs from December to mid-March, with departures every afternoon, and the Rovaniemi office is open every day of the year. The Ylitornio station's own booking page, which we read, does not print its season, so check its dates before planning a January or February day around it.

Can we fit Ranua Wildlife Park into the same day as the cabin?

Yes, if you do the park first. From September to May the park closes at four in the afternoon, and the sleigh rides to Santa's cabin leave between two and six, so a family can spend the middle of the day with the animals and take one of the later departures before the drive back to Kemi.

Do we have to book ahead?

For three of the four. The Ylitornio day ticket is sold online, the river house works by reserved times, and Ranua Resort takes bookings by email to its reception and asks for the children's names and Christmas wishes in advance. Only the Rovaniemi office needs nothing: you walk in and join the queue.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
