The short answer

The cheapest evening is the village company's at 115 euros, and if your plans might change, book it on the booking platform, where free cancellation runs to 24 hours before rather than seven days. A family of two adults and two children under twelve can price only the holiday village in advance: 460 euros. The Karigasniemi evening costs 120 euros a person and prints no child fare, so ask before counting the children.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest adult price. The family row multiplies each seller's own fares; it stays empty where a child fare in euros is not printed. The hotel prints a price per person and no child fare, so its family total is left empty rather than guessed.

Where these figures come from
  • Travel Utsjoki, own shop: Up to three hours by minivan with warm drinks, snacks and spare clothing, pick-up within eight kilometres, free cancellation up to seven days before.
  • Travel Utsjoki, on GetYourGuide: The same company's evening at the same price, with pick-up within ten kilometres and free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
  • Holiday Village Valle: Two to three hours by sleigh, car or snowshoes as the guide decides, with Sámi stories of the aurora and a printed child fare.
  • Hotel Guossi: About four hours by snowmobile sled from Karigasniemi, with overalls, a snack and a hut with a fire, priced per person with no child fare printed.

The aurora evenings sold around Utsjoki cost between 115 and 150 euros for an adult. The more interesting difference is inside one of them.

One tour, two sets of terms

The village company sells its evening on its own shop and on a booking platform at the same price. The terms differ: the platform lets you cancel free until a day before, while the company’s own terms refund in full only up to seven days before the tour and charge the whole price after that.1 For a traveller watching the forecast, the platform booking is the more forgiving one.

Where a family can add it up

The holiday village prints its fare for children under twelve next to the adult one, which makes it the only evening a family can price exactly in advance.2 The Karigasniemi hotel prints one price per person and no child fare, so a family has to ask what the children pay. The village company’s terms take thirty per cent off for under-twelves, but its shop does not say what the price is per.

The three evenings are compared by what they are like, rather than what they cost, on best northern lights tour in Utsjoki.

Questions people ask

Does staying outside the pick-up area cost more?

At the village company, yes, by an amount it does not publish: its own page picks up within eight kilometres of the village and offers further locations for an extra cost, while the booking-platform listing includes pick-up up to ten kilometres. If you are staying between eight and ten kilometres out, booking through the platform avoids the question entirely.

What does the holiday village's higher price buy?

Choice of transport and a story. The guide decides on the night between a sleigh pulled by a snowmobile up to the fells, a car or bus further away, and snowshoes near the village, and every evening includes what the aurora meant to the Sámi. It is 35 euros more than the minivan evening for an adult, and the only one of the three whose child fare is printed.

Is the Karigasniemi evening good value?

For what it includes, it is close to the cheapest: about four hours, a snowmobile sled ride, overalls, a snack and a hut with a fire and hot drinks, for 120 euros a person. The catches are that no child fare is printed, so a family has to ask, and that it is cancelled when the temperature falls below minus 25.
