Private reindeer tour in Levi: what a group can book

The short answer

Book the private farm visit by snowmobile sled if your group wants to feed reindeer and hear how a family herds them, with nobody else in the corral. Choose the herder's day if you want longer with the animals and a proper lunch. If what you want is a sleigh ride, neither is the right booking: take a shared sleigh ride and book every seat instead.

Where these figures come from
  • Private farm visit: A snowmobile sled to a family farm, an hour feeding semi-wild reindeer and a kota meal, for up to fifteen.
  • Private herder's day: A longer day with a herder in the wilderness, reached by snowmobile sled, with soup for lunch.
  • Shared 3 km sleigh ride: A riverside Sámi farm with a sleigh ride through the forest, sold per seat rather than as private.

The private reindeer visits sold in Levi are farm days rather than sleigh rides, and one operator sells them.

A family farm by sled

Scandinavian Travel Group takes your group by snowmobile sled to a private family reindeer farm, where you spend an hour feeding semi-wild reindeer at several stations before a kota meal of reindeer sausage and pancakes. Up to fifteen can come, and warm clothing is lent.1

A herder’s day

The same operator sells longer private herder’s days in the wilderness, reached by snowmobile sled, with soup or a fuller lunch.2

Questions people ask

Why is the farm visit recommended only from ten?

The reindeer are semi-wild and can be startled by sudden movement, so the operator recommends the visit for ages ten and above. Younger children can come only if they stay calm and close to their parents throughout. With a lively under-ten, a sleigh ride at a farm used to families is the easier outing.

What if there is no snow?

The farm is reached by a snowmobile sled across bogs, forest and fell, so the ride depends on snow. The operator says that without snow the transport is by bus both ways; the feeding and the kota meal stay the same. Early in the season, ask when you book which way you will travel.

What should we wear?

The operator lends warm winter clothing for the farm visit, and asks you to wear thermal layers and two pairs of woollen socks underneath. Most of the hour at the farm is spent standing and moving slowly between feeding stations, and the sled ride out is cold, so a hat and a neck warmer under the lent clothes help.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
