Reindeer with children in Pyhä-Luosto: the ride that fits your youngest

A low orange sun rising behind birches over snowfields and two small huts

A winter sunrise in Pelkosenniemi, the municipality Pyhä belongs to.

The short answer

With a child of three to six, book the shorter of the two rides at the reindeer park: it is enough for a small child, runs several times a day and suits a grandparent who cannot walk far. With a baby or a two-year-old, only the safari sold from Luosto and the lunch trip take them. Older children who will sit happily for longer get more from the longer ride.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Nothing is marked: a shorter ride is better for a toddler and worse for an older child. The farms rent winter clothing for 10 euros a person.

Where these figures come from
  • Half an hour: Thirty minutes in the sleigh with a parent, then feeding the reindeer at the park.
  • An hour: The same park and farm visit with a full hour in the sleigh on forest tracks.
  • Ride to lunch: A sleigh ride to a lávvu tent in the forest and a lunch of reindeer soup there.
  • Safari from Luosto: A ride with a herder for all ages, with the transfer and a thermal outfit included.

The reindeer park on the road between Pyhä and Luosto sells the same outing in two lengths, which is what makes it easy to match to a small child.

Half an hour

The short ride suits a small child and anyone who cannot walk far.1

An hour

The full hour is the same outing with twice the time in the sleigh.2

Younger than three

Kairankutsu’s lunch trip lists a category for infants up to three,3 and Lapland Safaris’ safari from Luosto is sold for all ages with its own category for children under four.4

What each ride costs a family is worked out on reindeer safari prices in Pyhä-Luosto.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Does a small child ride alone?

No. On the half-hour ride two people normally share a sleigh, so a child rides beside a parent. The other listings do not say how the sleighs are shared, so if two small children and one adult are booking, ask how they will be seated. On the Luosto safari, ask the same about a child under four.

Will the children get to feed the reindeer?

At the reindeer park, yes: on both the half-hour and the hour the guides feed the reindeer with the guests during the farm visit. On the lunch trip meeting the reindeer up close is included. The Luosto safari mentions a farm visit but not feeding, so ask.

Can we come in our own car?

Yes, to the reindeer park and the lunch farm. Arrive on time, wait in the car park if you are early and do not enter the farm without a guide. Otherwise the farms add a transfer for 20 euros a person, which starts collecting guests before the tour does.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
