The short answer

If you are choosing where to stay, the resort's package is the way to pay for a Muonio aurora evening: it starts at 962 euros a head for three or four nights with everything included, but it is binding and not refundable once paid. If you already have a bed, a single evening in Ylläs costs from 70 euros a head and one in Levi from 92, clothing included, and both are easier to cancel.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

The price row is not ranked: a package price buys several nights and much else, so setting it against a single evening would compare different things.

Where these figures come from
  • Muonio resort package: Three or four nights with full board, winter clothing, transfers and a programme that includes an aurora evening walk.
  • Ylläs: night by a fire: Two and a half hours at a fire after a short drive, thermal outfit and transfers from Ylläs included, all ages.
  • Levi: campfire evening: Three hours, about two of them outdoors by a campfire, with winter clothing, a grilled sausage and hot drinks.

There is no price for a Muonio aurora evening on its own. The resort sells its evenings inside packages, and the single evenings with a price are elsewhere.

Questions people ask

What do two adults pay for one evening near Muonio?

At the published prices, 140 euros for the Ylläs evening by a fire, 184 for the Levi campfire evening and 290 for the Levi aurora ride by snowmobile, two to a machine. Driving a snowmobile alone costs extra on the snowmobile evenings. None of these totals includes the fuel for the drive from Muonio and back, about three quarters of an hour each way.

What does the snowmobile deposit on the resort's aurora tour mean?

The resort's Christmas aurora package states a self-liability of up to 1,200 euros per snowmobile, which is what the driver pays towards damage to the machine. It is not charged unless something happens, but it is a real exposure for a first-time driver, and it is one reason the evening by car in the same package suits a party that has never driven a snowmobile.

Is there a refund if we see no aurora?

Not on anything read for this page. The resort says sightings cannot be guaranteed and its terms allow a programme to be changed or cancelled for weather or safety, without promising money back for cloud. The Levi and Ylläs evenings compared here make no such promise either; the refunds for an empty sky that exist near Muonio are on private evenings in Levi.
