Ice fishing in Muonio: which outing, and where you may fish alone

The short answer

For a first try with children, ask the resort for its three-hour outing: a snowmobile pulls you out in a sledge, children from four can come, and it runs on set days of the week. For comfort or privacy, book the heated tent for your own small group once its sales open. To fish alone, stay on a lake with a single rod and leave the river to someone who has checked its rules.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: only your own group. Neither Muonio outing printed a price on the reading date, so only the Ylläs trip can be priced; it is the nearest published alternative.

Where these figures come from
  • Harriniva: Ice Fishing: About three hours: a snowmobile pulls you in a sledge to a frozen lake or river, with a hot drink.
  • Wildmaker: Luxury Ice Fishing: Three to four hours for a small private group, by snowmobile and sled to a spacious tent heated by a wood-burning stove.
  • Lapland Safaris, Ylläs: Two and a half hours by a campfire after a short drive, thermal outfit lent, for all ages, 46 minutes from Muonio.

Two companies take guests ice fishing around Muonio, and in late September neither was selling it yet with a price attached.

The resort’s afternoon on the ice

The resort’s outing is the traditional one: a sledge behind a snowmobile, a hole in a frozen lake or river, a hot drink, about three hours in all. It takes children from four and groups of up to twenty.1

The heated tent

The smaller company does it the other way round: a snowmobile and sled to the best spot it knows, and a big tent with a wood-burning stove where you can fish indoors while a snowstorm blows outside, for three or four hours, lunch extra.2 It works in private groups of two to five, and says it opens bookings closer to winter.

Fishing on your own

A single rod through lake ice needs no fee in Finland,3 but the Muonio river is a border river with its own fishing rule, which names the ice-fishing rod among permitted gear without saying whether it is free.4 Keep to a lake unless you have asked.

The priced trips 46 minutes away are compared on ice fishing in Ylläs and ice fishing in Levi.

Questions people ask

Is the resort's outing on every day?

No. The description says its activities follow a fixed weekly programme, so not every activity runs every day, and it invites guests to ask what is possible during their stay. If ice fishing is the one thing you came for, find out the weekday before you fix your dates, and have the heated-tent company or a trip in Ylläs as the fallback.

What do I wear for three or four hours on the ice?

The heated-tent company rents thermal clothing, and its tent has a wood-burning stove, so the cold is less of a problem there than on open ice. The resort's outing description does not mention clothing; the resort's packages include a winter outfit for the whole stay, so guests on a package are covered, and anyone else should ask.

What if we have to cancel?

Both Muonio companies are strict. The resort's terms make a booking binding once paid, in full and in advance, and keep the whole amount if you cancel. The tent company keeps five per cent up to 30 days ahead, half between 30 and 7 days, and everything in the final week. The Ylläs trip sold by Lapland Safaris charges 25 euros if you cancel 72 hours or more ahead.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
