The short answer

For a first ride, book the resort's Lapp hut safari, which it describes as leisurely and made for beginners. For a day with a destination, book its Arctic Circle safari, with soup at the café on the circle. Staying in the village, book the three-hour run to Ruuhitunturi from the base in the centre. Only experienced riders should take on the full day to Savukoski.

Nothing is ranked: the long day is not better than the short one for someone who has never ridden. Prices and the cost of riding alone are on the snowmobile price page for Salla.

Where these figures come from
  • Lapp hut safari: A leisurely three hours on forest trails from the fell resort, which calls it ideal for beginners and families.
  • Arctic Circle safari: Five to six hours south to Salla's Arctic Circle sign and a bowl of soup at the café on the circle.
  • Village to Ruuhitunturi: Three hours from a base in the village centre to Ruuhitunturi fell, with sausages and coffee by a fire.
  • Savukoski day: Eight hours and about 200 km north through villages and marshland to Savukoski and back, with a meal on the way.

Salla’s snowmobile tours differ in length more than in anything else, from a gentle morning to a day that crosses into the next municipality.

For a first ride

Sallatunturin Tuvat describes its three-hour Lapp hut safari as a leisurely tour along Salla’s forest trails, ideal for beginners and families.1

For a destination

The same resort’s Arctic Circle safari rides south towards Lake Hautajärvi to Salla’s own Arctic Circle sign, with a bowl of soup at the café there before the ride back.2

From the village

Kola Extreme Safaris starts from the village centre and runs three hours to Ruuhitunturi fell, with coffee and sausages by a fire.3 Its eight-hour day covers about 200 km through the villages of Kotala and Saija to Savukoski and back.4

Questions people ask

How experienced should we be for the day to Savukoski?

Neither company prints a skill requirement, but eight hours and about 200 km in the saddle is a long day on the throttle, with forest trails and open marsh. Take it if you have ridden several times before and are comfortable in the cold for a full day. Ask the company what pace it keeps and how often it stops.

Can one of us ride as a passenger?

Yes at the fell resort, which prices every safari for two people to a sledge as well as one, with the passenger behind the driver. Neither company prints its licence rule on these pages, so ask which of you may drive, and if you both may, swap at the stops. Kola Extreme Safaris does not say how it seats two.

Can we see the national park?

The resort's national park safari covers about 60 km along Salla National Park, towards the eastern border, over about five hours with a picnic lunch. It suits riders who want the landscape of Finland's newest national park, and it sits between the Lapp hut morning and the Arctic Circle day in length.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
