The best ice fishing in Ylläs, by what happens to the catch

The short answer
For a real fishing day, book the hidden lakes: you reach them on snowshoes or skis, fish most of the day and eat the catch by the fire. For an afternoon without a long day out, the village lake trip is the shortest and cheapest. If you want to see how Finns fish with a net as well as a rod, take the trip to Luosujärvi.

Questions people ask
What fish are we likely to catch?
The Konijänkkä operator says perch or whitefish on the hidden lakes, and the Äkäslompolo company says there are enough perch in any lake here for a fish soup, with a sizeable whitefish for the lucky. Some lakes also hold rainbow trout. Nobody promises a catch.
Do these operators also fish by snowmobile?
Both do. The Konijänkkä operator rides 35 km to its lakeside hut for a five-hour fishing day with lunch, and the Äkäslompolo company rides about twelve kilometres to Lake Luosujärvi on Tuesdays for its own five-hour version. Both price a shared and a solo machine separately.
What if it is very cold?
The Äkäslompolo company lends thermal clothing and boots on all its trips. The Konijänkkä operator's fishing page does not list clothing, so ask whether it lends any. On the long day, much of the time is spent sitting still on the ice, so dress for that rather than for walking.
