The short answer

If cloud is your worry, take the minivan chase, which picks its direction from the latest forecast and lasts four hours. For a couple or a family who want the evening to themselves, the private sledge ride to a campfire takes up to six guests. A group of four who want a private night on the tundra get the best price per head from the guide who charges one sum for up to four. For the snowmobile itself, the lake evening is the one.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Where these figures come from
  • Kilpissafarit: minivan chase: Four hours by minivan, driving wherever the latest forecast is clearest, with a thermal outfit, photos and a hot drink.
  • Destination Kilpisjärvi: A private evening for up to six: a sledge ride of 15 kilometres to a campfire, sausages, hot drinks and a phone tripod.
  • Grayling Land: A private tundra evening for one to four at a single price, with sleigh transport and photographs by the guide.

Kilpisjärvi has four aurora evenings on sale, and they differ most in how you move and who you share the night with.

If cloud is the worry

The minivan chase is the only one that goes looking. It picks its direction from the latest forecast, which suits a night of patchy cloud better than a fixed spot on a lake.1

If you want the night to yourselves

The private sledge evening takes your party alone, up to six people, on a ride of fifteen kilometres to a campfire, with sausages, hot drinks and a tripod for your phone.2 It takes children over ten.

If you are four

The tundra guide charges one price for one to four people, so a group of four has a private evening for less than four seats on the minivan chase would cost.3

If the snowmobile is the point

The evening on the tundra lake, driving or in a sleigh, is set out on northern lights in Kilpisjärvi.

Questions people ask

Is there anything for a solo traveller?

The minivan chase needs four people to run, and the snowmobile evening two on machines or four in the sleigh, so on a quiet night a solo booking may not go ahead. The private evenings take a single guest, but the tundra guide's price is the same for one person as for four, and the sledge evening's starting figure does not say what it covers. Ask for the price for one before you book.

Which evening is the latest?

The minivan chase runs from half past seven until half past eleven, the longest of the four. The snowmobile evening on the lake runs from eight to eleven, and the private sledge evening starts at half past seven and lasts three hours. The tundra guide's page gives three hours without a start time, so agree one when you book.

Do we need to bring warm clothes?

Less than you might think. The safari company lends thermal overalls, boots, wool socks and mittens on its evenings, the sledge evening lists a snowsuit, boots, socks, mittens, a balaclava and a helmet, and the tundra guide a full winter outfit down to the hat. Bring warm layers to wear underneath and a thin pair of gloves for handling a camera.
