The best snowmobile tour in Ylläs for the rider you are

The short answer

For a calm first ride with something to watch, book the nature tour with the Siberian jays: it is the cheapest here and families can come. With teenagers, the three-hour forest ride takes them from thirteen. Adults who want to drive the whole way themselves should book the solo ride. For a proper half day with a hot lunch in a hut, the wilderness hut tour is the one.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: lowest adult price. The wilderness hut costs more from 13 December to 3 January and from 31 January to 28 February. A longer ride carries no mark: it is not better, only longer.

Where these figures come from
  • Nature tour: Three hours and 30 km with a stop to feed Siberian jays, from Äkäslompolo on Tuesday mornings.
  • Forest ride: Three hours and about 30 km through the forest, two to a machine, from the age of thirteen.
  • Solo ride for adults: Three hours and 40 to 50 km with every adult driving a snowmobile of their own.
  • Wilderness hut: Four to five hours on a 35 km loop with a hot lunch by the stove at the hut.

The snowmobile tours sold directly by the Ylläs safari houses are built for different riders.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

What licence do drivers need?

A car or motorcycle licence and an age of eighteen for whoever drives. The Äkäslompolo operator says a foreign licence must be in the Latin alphabet or come with a translation into one of several listed languages, and that you must carry it on the ride. Passengers need no licence.

Who pays if the snowmobile is damaged?

The Ylläsjärvi operator caps the driver's liability at 990 euros per snowmobile per accident. The Äkäslompolo operator includes insurance in the price but does not print a figure for its safaris, and the hut tour's operator does not state one, so ask both before you ride.

Can we cancel if the weather turns?

The Äkäslompolo operator lets you cancel free until four in the afternoon the day before. The hut tour's operator takes a deposit and charges half the price from thirty to ten days before and the full price after that. The Ylläsjärvi operator's pages do not print a rule, so ask.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
