Reindeer in Ranua: what is on offer

The short answer

Book the park by day if you want the reindeer as part of an afternoon outdoors: you feed them, walk one on a lead, and spend the rest of three hours skating, sledging and in the sauna, for the lower price. Choose the after-dark version only if you also hope for the aurora. If what you want is a ride in a sleigh behind reindeer, the park does not offer one: book one of the reindeer farm's rides or the short lakeside ride instead.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per person. Both price per person, last three hours and lend winter outerwear. Only price is marked.

Where these figures come from
  • Lupland Adventures: by day: Three hours at the activity park by a forest lake: feed the reindeer and lead one on a walk, then skate, sledge, snowshoe or try an e-bike, with a sauna and an ice bath.
  • Lupland Adventures: after dark: The same park and the same reindeer after sunset, with campfire treats and the chance of the aurora overhead, for 30 euros more.

The reindeer outing the booking platforms sell in Ranua is an activity park. Lupland Adventures sells a three-hour visit to its park beside a forest lake in which feeding the reindeer and leading one on a walk sits among skating, kicksleds, sledging, snowshoes, e-mountain bikes and a sauna with an ice bath. Sleigh rides are sold separately, off the platforms.

By day or after dark

The same park is sold twice. By day it costs 119 euros, and the reindeer are the centrepiece of an afternoon outdoors. After sunset it costs 149 euros, adds campfire treats and the chance of the aurora overhead, and is compared with the village’s other aurora evening in northern lights in Ranua. Both need at least two people.

For a sleigh ride

The park has no sleigh rides, but Ranua does. A family reindeer farm sells rides on its own shop, from a few minutes as part of a farm visit to a half-hour safari through the forest,1 and a local reindeer company runs a short ride round a frozen lake that starts in the village.2 Which of them suits whom is set out on the best reindeer tour in Ranua. The rest of the village is on the Ranua destination page.

What the same activity park costs by day and after sunset, and what the hunt by car adds, is worked out in northern lights tour prices in Ranua.

Posio, an hour north, has no farm visit on sale and reindeer on its roads instead: reindeer in Posio gives the herders’ association’s advice for meeting them from a car.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can children come?

The listings set no age limit and price per person, and the park is built around things children tend to enjoy: sledging, kicksleds, skating and the reindeer. The sauna and ice bath are part of the ticket but not something anyone has to do. Ask the company about the youngest children when booking, since the listings do not say how a toddler travels in the sleigh.

How do we get to the park?

From the company's base at Arctic Guesthouse & Igloos in the village you travel on in a sleigh towed by a snowmobile, wrapped in reindeer hides. Arrive at least fifteen minutes before the start. If you are staying elsewhere in Ranua, ask whether the company can collect you, since the park listings do not include a pick-up.

Is there a reindeer sleigh ride in Ranua?

Yes, though not at the park, which lets you feed and lead reindeer but not ride behind them. The Vaara reindeer farm sells its rides on its own shop, from a few minutes on a farm visit to a half-hour forest safari, and Kaktsa Reindeers runs a short ride round a frozen lake, sold on Lupland's shop and at the resort reception. None of them is on the booking platforms.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
