Santa Claus price from Salla: what the visit costs a family

The short answer

For a family with one or two children, the café's afternoon is the simpler choice and saves the long drive. For a large family, or one whose children are all over three, the drive to Rovaniemi's free office can pay for itself. The private version has no published price, so ask before deciding on it.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: a free meeting and a free meeting. Only the prices are marked. The drive to Rovaniemi is not counted in them, and for a family it is a day's travel and fuel for about 300 km.

Where these figures come from
  • Arctic Circle café: The shared afternoon with Mrs Santa's gingerbread and a family photo, priced per person with under-threes free.
  • Café, private: The same afternoon for one family as a personalised private experience, arranged directly and not priced.
  • Santa Claus Office, Rovaniemi: The free walk-in meeting, open all year, with official photographs sold separately.

Salla’s Santa afternoon is priced per person, which makes the family’s size the thing that decides whether it is good value.

Per person, babies free

The café on the Arctic Circle charges 105 euros a person, with children under three free, for the afternoon with Mrs Santa and the family photo with Santa.1 A couple with a baby pays for two; a family with two school-age children pays for four.

The unpriced and the free

The café offers the same afternoon to a single family as a private visit, but publishes no price for it. The Santa Claus Office in Rovaniemi charges nothing for the meeting, at the cost of a long drive each way.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Does the price include the photo with Santa?

Yes. The listing includes a family photo with Santa in the afternoon. At the Rovaniemi office the meeting is free but the official photographs are what you pay for, from 55 euros a set, with no obligation to buy, which narrows the gap for a family that wants one.

What does the drive to Rovaniemi cost?

About an hour and fifty minutes and 150 km each way, so around 300 km for the day. Fuel for that, and lunch out, belongs in the comparison with the café's price, and so does a day of the holiday. It is left out of the table because it depends on your car and route.

Can we pay for the private version on the day?

The café does not publish how the private visit is paid or priced. Ask for the price and the payment terms in writing when you arrange it, and whether a deposit is taken. The shared afternoon, by contrast, is booked through the café's own booking page.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
