The short answer

For a priced, predictable booking, take one of the Suomutunturi safaris: they run from an hour to four, share a machine between two adults, print a child fare and include the gear, guide and insurance. If you are staying in town and would rather not drive to the fell, ask the resort in Kemijärvi about its two-hour ride, whose price you get only by asking.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Highlighted figures are the best in that row: the lowest price per adult sharing a machine. Suomutunturi prices each seat per person. The town resort prints no price online, so its column cannot be ranked.

Where these figures come from
  • Suomu: first ride: An hour on the snow with driving instruction first, the shortest and cheapest safari at the fell.
  • Suomu: to the top: Two hours through the forest to the top of Suomutunturi, with coffee made over a fire.
  • Suomu: Käsmäjoki: Three hours to a suspension bridge over the Käsmäjoki and coffee in a kota.
  • Jauri Resort: A two-hour forest ride from the resort in town, with driving instruction and safety rules before you set off.

The booking platforms sell no snowmobile safari from Kemijärvi. The town’s own tourist site lists two companies that do: a resort in town, and the safari company at the fell resort of Suomutunturi.1

The fell’s six safaris

Suomutunturi publishes a whole ladder, from a first hour on the snow to four hours out to Vilmavaara, with the price for two adults sharing a machine, for one driving alone and for a child of three to eleven. Every one includes the gear, the guide and insurance, and none runs for fewer than two people.2 Two of the six are not in the table: the aurora night and the 24-kilometre run to a pond for Finnish traditional food.

The ride from town

The resort in Kemijärvi sells a two-hour forest ride and puts no price online. It suits a guest already staying in town who would rather not drive out to the fell, and it is the one to call rather than click.

The trails behind it

The town maintains marked snowmobile routes, part of the White Sea route that crosses Finnish Lapland, and the guided safaris run from Suomutunturi and from Pyhätunturi.3 Pyhä is 46 minutes away, and its safaris are on snowmobile safari in Luosto; the rest of Kemijärvi is on the Kemijärvi destination page.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can I take my own or a rented snowmobile out on the trails?

The town maintains marked, surfaced snowmobile routes, and its tourist site says the route from the Rovaniemi border through the centre is part of the international White Sea Snowmobile Route, which runs from northern Sweden across Finnish Lapland. The trail map is on the national retkikartta.fi service. A guided safari is the simpler choice for a first ride; riding alone is a different undertaking.

What does the resort in town include with its ride?

A hotel in town that books the ride through the resort says the price includes overalls, helmets, boots, wool socks and driving gloves, which is a full outfit. The resort's own page lists nothing it includes, so the hotel's list is the only one in print. Neither page prints a price, so ask for one along with the date, and ask whether the outfit comes in children's sizes if you are bringing any.

Is the aurora safari worth it?

It is the one Suomutunturi safari built around the night: two and a half hours to the top of the fell after dark, sausages at a lean-to and hot juice by the fire, at 155 euros a head sharing a machine. The resort promises nothing about the sky, only the chance, so treat it as a night ride with a view and count any aurora as a bonus.

Lapland Handbook Staff

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
