Best snowmobile tour from Posio: one choice for each kind of rider
Which ride suits you depends less on the machine than on who is riding and how far you will drive.
The short answer
For the shortest first ride, drive an hour to Ranua. With children, go to Kemijärvi's fell, where every safari has a child fare, or to Salla's fell hut ride. For a longer day with coffee on a summit, Kemijärvi again. Only experienced riders with a licence should rent in Posio and ride its routes alone. If you want a guide in Posio itself, ask the holiday village the tourist office names.
On this page
Posio has snowmobile routes but no guided safari with a published price, so the best tour depends on who is riding.1
A first, short ride
Ranua, an hour away, sells an hour on a machine with a guide and a winter outfit. It is the shortest ride within reach and the quickest way to find out whether you like it.
With children
Kemijärvi’s fell safaris print a child fare on every ride, and Salla’s ride to the Ruuhitunturi hut has one too. Ranua puts children under fifteen in a sled behind the guide.
A longer day
The Suomutunturi summit ride in Kemijärvi runs two hours with coffee by a fire at the top, and the same company’s food trip three and a half.
Riding alone
A rental machine is available near Posio by the day, with no guide.2 It suits licensed, experienced riders who want Posio’s own routes and nothing else.
Why there is nothing priced in Posio itself is covered on snowmobile safari in Posio.

Questions people ask
Can we look for the northern lights from a snowmobile?
Yes, in Kemijärvi. The same Suomutunturi company runs a two-and-a-half-hour night ride to the top of the fell with sausages at a lean-to and hot juice, at 155 euros per adult sharing a machine, 70 for a child of three to eleven and 195 for riding alone. The lights are never guaranteed, and the drive back to Posio after a night ride is late and dark.
Is there anything guided in Posio at all?
The Posio tourist office names Holiday Village Himmerki for guided snowmobile safaris, with a phone number and no prices, and the holiday village's own experiences page says nothing about snowmobiles. That means a guided ride in Posio is a phone call rather than a booking: ask what they run, for how many and what it costs before you plan the day around it.
Which neighbour is the longest drive?
Salla, at about an hour and a half, a few minutes beyond Kemijärvi at an hour and twenty-five. Each safari starts from the operator's own base, so add the drive both ways to the ride. For a one-hour ride, Ranua's shorter drive matters most; for a three-hour day, the extra half hour to Kemijärvi weighs less.
