The short answer

Count seats, not people. Two adults sharing a machine with two children in the sleigh pay 240 euros on the husky kennel's 20-kilometre tour and 300 on Näkkälä Eräpalvelut's 22-kilometre safari, but Näkkälä's price includes the riding gear and the kennel's does not. A machine to yourself costs 35 to 60 euros more on the short rides. Book only dates you are sure of: the kennel's short tours are generally not refunded.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Kennel: Hetta Trails, 20 kmNäkkälä: 22 kmKennel: Palojoki, 40 kmNäkkälä: village trip
Two adults sharing, two in the sleigh €240 €300 €480 €670

Riding gear Hired by the piece Included Hired by the piece Included, adult sizes

Totals add the published per-seat prices for two adults sharing one machine and two passengers in the sleigh. Nothing is marked, because the four are rides of different length and a higher total buys more distance.

Where these figures come from
  • Kennel: Hetta Trails, 20 km: An hour and a half on the husky kennel's short snowmobile tour, clothing hired separately if you need it.
  • Näkkälä: 22 km: An hour and a half with driving instruction and riding gear in the price, for two people or more.
  • Kennel: Palojoki, 40 km: Two to three hours into the wilderness, run about once a week, clothing hired separately if you need it.
  • Näkkälä: village trip: About 50 km from Hetta to the Sámi village of Näkkälä, with gear, food and a hot drink at a kota.

Snowmobile prices in Hetta are per seat, and there are three kinds of seat: a share of a machine, a machine to yourself and a place in the sleigh behind the guide. A family’s total is the sum of its seats.

Two companies, two ways of pricing gear

Näkkälä Eräpalvelut puts driving instruction and riding gear in the price,1 in adult sizes. The husky kennel prices the ride and hires clothing separately. For a family that brings its own warm kit, the kennel is the cheaper short ride; for adults who need everything, the difference shrinks.

Going solo

A machine to yourself costs 35 euros more on Näkkälä’s short safari and 60 more on the kennel’s in high season, 45 in low. The kennel does not say which weeks are which.

The refund question

The kennel says short tour bookings are generally non-refundable.2 Näkkälä’s page gives no terms, so ask before paying. The kennel’s rides side by side are on snowmobile safaris in Enontekiö.

Questions people ask

What does the gear add at the kennel?

The kennel's aurora snowmobile page hires snowmobile clothing and boots at 5 euros a piece, with gloves, hats and buffs at 2.50, so a jacket, trousers and boots for two adults comes to 30 euros before the small items. Näkkälä Eräpalvelut's short safaris include the riding gear in the price, so for a pair who need everything the two short rides come out at the same 190 euros.

Which ride is cheapest per kilometre?

Näkkälä Eräpalvelut's 50-kilometre safari, at about 3.10 euros a kilometre for a seat on a shared machine, then the kennel's 40-kilometre Palojoki tour at 3.50. The two short rides both come to about 4 euros a kilometre. Distance is not the only thing a price buys, but for riders who want time on the machine, the half-day rides are where it is cheapest.

Does the permit cost extra?

Not on the tracks around Hetta or the Victoria route, where the kennel's guide to the area says no permit is needed. A permit from Metsähallitus is needed only to cross the tundra and wilderness towards Kilpisjärvi or Karesuvanto, which matters if you hire a machine and ride on your own rather than joining a guided safari.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
