Santa Claus with children in Muonio: what each age can do

Presents wrapped in gold, silver and red paper piled under a Christmas tree dusted with artificial snow

The short answer

With children under twelve, pick the Christmas package built for smaller children, which includes a private Santa visit, a gift for each child and winter clothing for everyone. Do not book the aurora Christmas package expecting Santa: it has none and is designed for children of twelve and up. On your own arrangements, Levi's visits are 46 minutes away, and only one of them sets an age limit.

The Santa question for a family in Muonio is settled mostly by the age of the youngest child.

Two Christmas packages, one Santa

The Muonio operator sells two Christmas packages with the same arrival dates. The aurora one is designed for adults and for families whose children are twelve or older, and its programme has no Santa in it. The one built for families with smaller children is the one with the Santa visit.1 Book by the programme, not by the Christmas in the name.

What the Santa package gives children

Santa meets one family at a time, each child receives a small gift, and while they wait their turn the children play in the snow outside. Everyone is lent a winter overall, snow boots, a balaclava and gloves for the stay, and the package brings you from Kittilä Airport or Kolari station.2

On your own arrangements: Levi

Levi, 46 minutes away, sells four Santa visits, and only one of them sets an age limit in its listing. The cabin visit calls itself suitable for all ages, and the private sleigh visit asks for the children’s names and ages so that Santa can greet them. The exception is the snowshoe trip, which takes no child under ten.3 None of the listings mentions a pick-up in Muonio, so plan on driving. The Levi visits are compared on Santa Claus in Levi.

Questions people ask

Can a baby come to the Santa visit in the package?

The package describes itself as suitable for families with children of all ages and sets no lower limit for the Santa visit. What is worth asking about is clothing: the lent winter gear is listed for all guests without any mention of sizes for the very youngest, so bring a snowsuit for an infant, and ask how long a baby would be outdoors during the visit.

What happens with the children on the package snowmobile trip?

Adults drive and children ride in a sleigh pulled by the guide's snowmobile, for an hour and a half over ten to fifteen kilometres. A driver has to be eighteen with a category B driving licence, and the self-liability is up to 1,200 euros per snowmobile. It is a separate day from the Santa visit, not part of it.

Are there age limits on the Levi elf park?

This site's record of the listing does not include one: it shows three hours with an elf as your guide, Santa, reindeer feeding, gingerbread and a sledging hill, which reads as built for children, but it prints no minimum or maximum age. Ask before booking with a baby or a toddler, since the three hours include a sledging hill and time outdoors with the reindeer.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
