Ice fishing in Oulu: the morning on the sea ice

The short answer

Book the Nallikari morning if you are in Oulu and want to try it once: the walk onto the ice is short, everything from overalls to the drill is lent, and a heated tent goes up in wind or hard frost, so it suits beginners and families. If you want the ride out onto the ice to be part of the day, look at the trips sold in Kemi instead.

Ice fishing in Oulu is sold by Nallikari Safaris as a two-hour trip from its centre on Nallikari beach. You change into lent overalls, gloves, a hat and boots, then walk five to fifteen minutes out onto the frozen sea, where everyone drills their own hole and the guide shows how to work the lure. A sonar for the group shows the fish reacting under the ice, a heated tent goes up if it is windy or very cold, and there are hot drinks by a fire on the ice.1

When it runs

The city’s winter programme lists it every morning from nine to eleven, from 22 December to 31 March.2 Outside that season, check the listing’s calendar before planning around it.

For a longer day

Ice fishing in Kemi compares trips where getting there is part of the day, one of them by snowmobile onto the Bothnian Bay. Kemi is 106 kilometres from Oulu, about an hour and twenty minutes by car.3 For one morning’s try from the city, Nallikari is the obvious booking; drive north only if the journey out onto the ice is what you want.

Tours you can book

Questions people ask

Can children fish too?

The listing prints no age limit and says no previous experience is needed, so on paper it is open to every age that can keep warm outdoors. It does not say which sizes of thermal overalls and boots it lends, so for a small child ask when you book, or bring the child's own snowsuit and boots as a fallback.

What happens in bad weather?

The listing says every trip is adjusted to the weather on the day for safety and comfort, without saying when it would be called off altogether. Free cancellation runs until 24 hours before the start, with a full refund, so a forecast of storm or deep frost is a reason to decide the day before rather than on the morning.

Can we keep what we catch?

The listing does not say. It talks about the strike and seeing the fish rise on the sonar, but not what happens to the catch afterwards, so ask when you book if taking fish home matters, and think about whether your accommodation has a kitchen before you ask the guide to keep one.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
