Ice fishing with children from Salla: which trip a family can book

The short answer

With children of school age who will enjoy the ride, book the Salla trip: an adult drives, the child rides along, and the picnic lunch breaks up the day. With toddlers or preschoolers, drive to Kemijärvi for the resort's two-hour trip, which lends outdoor clothing and keeps the fishing close to warm buildings. Ask either about children's sizes in the clothing.

How the operators compare

Prices are the operators' own published starting prices as of the date this guide was updated, and they change through the season.

Nothing is ranked: the right trip depends on the youngest child. What each costs a family is on the ice fishing price page for Salla.

Where these figures come from
  • Salla: snowmobile and pond: Three to four hours with a snowmobile ride each way, a child fare from three and a picnic lunch.
  • Kemijärvi: resort lake: Two hours on the lake beside Jauri Resort, with outdoor clothing lent and children under three free.

For a family, the ice fishing within reach of Salla differs most in how a child gets to the ice and how long they stay there.

By snowmobile in Salla

Sallatunturin Tuvat’s trip is priced for children from three to eleven and takes families by snowmobile to a wilderness pond for fishing and a picnic lunch, over three to four hours.1 The resort’s safaris provide the outdoor gear, so everyday clothes are enough to start.

Beside a resort in Kemijärvi

Jauri Resort fishes on the lake next to it for two hours, lends outdoor clothing, includes licences and a warm drink, and lets children under three come free.2

Questions people ask

Where does a child sit on the Salla trip?

The fell resort prices two people to a sledge and a child fare from three to eleven, which means the child rides behind an adult on the snowmobile. Its page does not say whether small children can ride in a sleigh behind the guide instead. Ask, since for a three-year-old the difference matters more than the fish.

How do we keep a child warm by the hole?

Wool next to the skin, a fleece and a snowsuit, winter boots and mittens rather than gloves, and a foam pad to sit or kneel on, since the ice draws heat away fast. Short walks around the spot between bites help more than another layer, and a thermos of something sweet helps most.

Will the children catch anything?

Neither trip promises a catch, and a quiet session is common. Children who know in advance that waiting is part of it cope better. The Salla trip's picnic lunch and the Kemijärvi trip's warm drink give the day a point whatever the fish do, so frame it as an outing rather than a contest.

Lapland Handbook is written by its editorial staff in Rovaniemi. Every price, age limit and group size in a comparison is read from the operator's own page and marked "Not stated" when the operator does not publish it. Each guide names who should not book, and names the operator that suits each kind of group, whichever it is.
